type file.ext > Lpt1 used to work (Win9X)
Is there anyway to get NT to do the same thing? It just tells me access denied.
I also can't print from some old Dos programs that run as a complicated mess of batchfiles and .exe's

Anyone know how I can open up my printer port?

Capture a printer port to a defined windows printer. After you have set the printer up in windows right click on it and select capture printer port. --->

Nevermind, I think that only works with network printers. The HAL layer might not let you do that in NT.

Thanks for the reply rahvin, :) but I got it figured out,:D and it's not HAL.
It's HP print drivers...

You can find the fix @ MS's knowledgebase (Q180892)
basically a registry key needs to be deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\ HP Laserjet 5 Language Monitor)
and this file "c:\%SystemRoot%\System32\Hpdcmon.dll" needs to be deleted or renamed.
