Printing problems with Canon IP4000

I refilled my main black tank with ink and it prints like it is still running out of ink. What could be causing this? What is weird is that I used an old tank I had from a Canon S600 refilled with the same ink and it prints fine. So it must be something gone wrong with the tank from the IP4000. On a related note, does anyone know if I can use the color refill ink I had for the S600 in the IP4000? For example the S600 yellow is BCI-3eY and the ip4000 yellow is BCI-6Y. Would it hurt anything to use the S600 colors in the IP4000? If there is a better place to ask could you please point me to the site?

Thanks!

Sound like you did not lid it tight enough it leaks out real fast. It happened with my old BJC6000. Not sure about BCI-3eY ink will get better result on IP4000...I wouldn't want to risk it.

3e-series inks are supposed to be pigmented - 6-series inks are dye-based. Some refill ink companies use dye-based inks for everything, some do it right. You can get away with using dye-based ink instead of pigmented, but I wouldn't chance the other way around (using pigmented where dye-based should be used).

How many tanks have you put thru your 4000. Have you cleaned the bottom surface (paper side) of the print head yet? Maybe it's time... I know that my 3000 had buiilt up some ridges of dried ink on the paper side of the print head. I carefully cleaned that off with distilled water (q-tip used in a rolling motion, not rubbing) - or you can just set the head on several layers of coffee filter soaked with distilled water. It made a world of difference.

Only the 3eBK (big black) is pigment ink - the other 3e series, color as well as the "photo black", are dye based (IIRC).

I have only put 2 tanks of the big black through. I did clean the head but I think my problem has to do with the tank. My old black tank (S600) works fine with the Hobbicolors black ink. Two of my colored tanks are running out. I got some colored ink that I got from a guy on ebay awhile ago for my S600 and I am wondering if I can use this ink for my ip4000? Does anyone know for sure if the colored inks are dye-based?

I just checked with Canon support and they told me that the 3e color tanks are dye based, but who knows how they compare to the ink in the 6-series tanks in hue and intensity. You may have to mess around quite a bit with the color settings to get decent looking photo prints.

And it takes a bit to get the sponge resaturated if you let it get too low. You should never let the ink get so low that you actually notice a difference in the output - at that point at least some of the nozzles may be running dry and therefore could burn out. The ink acts as a head coolant too.

Thanks for checking that out. I don't mind messing with color settings as long as I won't damage the printer using the 3e ink.

I had one bad ( IP5000) black tank. The symtoms were that it would print fine at first, but when left for even a day the printhead would clog. If left for several days it would glog severely and require a removal style cleaning.

I assumed the tank didn't seal right to the printhead and replaced the tank. All was then fine. This is the only problem I've had with Canon inkjets since 1994.
