Printing problems: document failed to print

I just set up a new computer for my grandfather. It's completely up-to-date hardware with WinXP, but his peripherals are all old! His scanner still uses serial, and his printer uses parallel. Luckily his new motherboard has a serial, and luckily I had a parallel -> USB adapter.

I plugged it in and the printer installed without a hitch. The only problem is when I try to print something that's NOT a text file with 2-3 lines of text. It will print about 1/4th of the document and then say "This document has failed to print" without much other information. I checked to see if bidirectional printing was turned on, but it's turned off and the checkbox is greyed out. I also tried changing the port from USB to an LPT port, but then I couldn't get it to print at all (but I might have been setting it up incorrectly).

Any ideas? Thanks!

These USB to parallel are Not universally compatible with every printer that is out there.

Given the price of All in One printing/scanning unit or stand alone printers there is really No reason to stick to the old devices.
