Why is it when I print on photo paper my pics are ridiculously dark, yet when I print on regular paper it looks normal (just no qualities of nice photo paper)

I've tried different drivers, the only way to make it look sorta right is to copy and edit the photo's in another folder and increase the brightness ~150%.

edit: doh, I've got a lexmark z65, it prints excellent res on regular paper, way better than the HP's at work, but it has issues printing on photo paper no matter what the printer settings are.
