Printing on network with Magicolor Laser

I just got a Minolta Magicolor Laser printer with built in network adapter. I was wondering if anyone has any experience printing to a printer directly on the network from XP? I have set an IP address on the printer in synch with my network and have setup the subnet mask and gateway (I don't know why this is necessary) yet cannot see the printer on the network. This makes a bit of sense. So next I installed the drivers and then tried to setup a port to the printer's IP address and this appears impossible to do in XP. I guess I am heading in the direction of attempting to print directly to the IP address of the printer but don't know if that is possible. The printer setup tries to get you to browse for the printer on the network and since it is not attached to a computer, it is not possible to "see" it on the network. If anyone has ever done anything like this and would care to share their knowledge with me, I would be most thankful.
