Printing issues with Win XP and Word on home network

I am running WinXP Pro and networked to a Win98 machine with an HP Deskjet 5740 attached to the Win98 machine (by USB not parallel).

When I print a Word document, after it sends the print job, Word closes (but it does print). Also, in the printer settings it shows the printer as offline and it will not let me choose to put the printer "online". When I click on "Use Printer Online" I get the error message "Operation could not be completed".

I have all the latest Win XP Updates and Office 2000 updates.

What am I missing?

So you're printing from XP: the printer is offline and you still can print? What am I missing?
If the printer is offline, you can't connect to it and reinstalling it won't help, I recommend resharing it on Win98, check the drivers (there has to be one for XP) in the same window, enable Netbui and now add the printer in XP (network printer).

I don't understand how it will print when "offline" either. I installed th XP drivers by running the install from the printer disk. It had an option that said the printer was connected to another computer in the network so I chose that and it seemed ok. Previously I tried installing by browsing to the 98 machine but that machine didn't have the XP driver on it so it would not install.

I will try uninstalling and reinstalling again but I don't think that will solve the problem. I will also check the box you indicated.

This is a friends network that I help support and they said a similar thing happened with their laptop (running WinXP Pro) so they took the laptop to the shop. I haven't been able to find out what they did to the laptop but it works fine now. The laptop is "out of town" this weekend so I cannot compare settings or drivers.

Thanks for the reply and I will give it a try.

could be infections, scan your system in all its aspects

because my sister's friend is a crackhead with so much trash on his comp, that when people try to send stuff out of word, it's garbled lettering.

you should install the XP drivers from the CD, choose usb or lpt port (mpt network), then in the proprieties of the printer, under ports, change the port to the networked printer.

can you ping 98 from XP and can you access 98 shared directories from XP? check the firewall.
maybe you should try renaming the shared printer to something simple like HP, or similar.
can you connect/install and print locally on XP?
