Printing Duplex manually - HP Printer

Hey all,

I'm sure most people know that with lots of printers, you can choose to print Double Sided manually. This is supposed to print out every other page, then you flip them over and put them back in and it prints the other sides.

I've used this successfully many times but have also seen it not work a lot.

I have a user with a 3800 Hp printer and another with a 3500. Both of these have the option to print that way but both of them just print out the document normally from 1 to the end so it's not working.

We've tried reinstalling the HP software and also reimaged one of the machines as a test and it still didn't help.

Anyone know why this works on some printers and not with others? Or maybe it's a driver thing? This is all on XP by the way.

Personally, i just do it myself. Its not hard to just tell it to print every odd page, then flip the stack over yourself, and print the even numbers. Just make sure you set it to back to front instead of front to back....imo its easier to keep track of things that way.

I do it with my HP4M all the time (well, frequently) when printing manuals. Odd pages, then I switch to Manual Feed instead of using the tray. Reason is that if a page is skipped, you have to throw out the prints and start over, at least after the point where the error occurs. Pages that have already been printed on once seem to have a greater chance of an error using the tray. However, Manual Feed is virtually totally reliable. Plus, if you do have a problem when using the Manual Feed mode, you only have to redo one page, not a stack.

If you're having a problem you might try a different driver. I can use either the Postscript or the PCL driver with my HP4M.
