Printin' from a 98 to a w2k shared printer.

First, the Error:
There was an error found when printing the document 'printer test page' to LPT1: do you want to retry the print job?

Circumstances:
simply attempting to print a test page from the 98 client (NOT 98SE) to the 2000pro shared printer.

Setup:

Server:
W2K SP2 and SP3. All critical updates. Direcway Satellite Internet via USB connection (not my idea) shared on the NIC @ 192.168.0.1 via ICS. The xerox printer is connected via the parallel port and is shared, named 'xerox' (so it's not the 8 character limitation) The printer will print from the 2000 box just fine tho.

The 98 box named 'aptiva' is a user on the w2k box and is logging in as 'aptiva' when it boots. The printer is installed w/ the 98 driver version on the 98 box. When I request a test page from the 98 box through the shared xerox on the w2k box it produces the above error.

This should be easy enough to find in the KB right? pffff... I wish! Here is the ONLY article that I found pertaining to the error
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q319119

Its suggestion says to change the BIOS settings from Standard to Automatic or OS or something... I tried EVERY setting that the BIOS had to offer. (even flashed to the newest BIOS setting) 😉

Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!! PLEEEEEAAAAAASE help! 😉

Thanks and God Bless

MS Error messages can be cryptic. Even numbered event ID messages can mean multiple things. If I were you I would check your security. Have you changed things from the default in your LOCAL SECURITY POLICY? To accesss it type "secpol.msc" in your RUN box. If you tweaked this AT ALL you should check to make sure the "access this computer from the network" contains the user or users you want to have access to your machine. Also make sure the security settings and share settings on the printer reflect this setup also.

If you haven't already created an account for your user that accesses the 98 box, it would be a good idea. Just to troubleshoot things, make sure the EVERYONE user is in the security settings and has rights to the printer. Then tighten it up from there.

PS...if you enter anything into the "access this computer from the network" setting then you effective lock EVERYBODY ELSE OUT THAT ISN'T LISTED THERE.

Make sure you can type the computername of the computer you want to access in the run box like so: \\computername. You should be able to view the shared printers and folders. If you can't even get this then you have security issues.

Yes, once I login from one of the 98 machines (hit enter when it boots up), while the 2000 box is on, I can access shares and stuff w/o havin' to re-type in any passwords...

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before??

bump if it's even similar... and LMK what happend... maybe it'll help! 😉

Thanks and God Bless!

Sorry Tanner. I re-read your post and picked up the situation better. 🙂 Ok, if you open up the printer on the 98 side (client) what is in the ports section? I mean is it printing to LPT1 or something? If so, is LPT1 mapped to the share? IE \\computername\xerox or something? For some odd reason I have seen clients map a printer to a sharename during printer setup, and it doesn't auto pick that share for the printer. Basically you:

1) Can see the computername and shared printer when you browse to it in network neighborhood.
2) Can print just fine when you print to it from the 2000 Pro computer.

Yeah, re-reading this setup, double check your LPT port mappings, and make sure its set in the drop down box.
