I'm in need of a printer. Anyone have suggestions? I don't want to spend too much, but don't want something that has super expensive ink cartridges. It'll mainly be for printing documents and maps, so the color and photo printing aspects aren't as important.

You're printing maps so I am guessing you want color. How much map printing do you do? About 95% of my printing is done in B&W so I bought a used HP Laserjet from Ebay about 3 years ago for home use. It works like new and it is super cheap to operate. For color I bought an HP but if I had it to do over I would probably get a $50 Canon. HP and Lexmark cost a ton to ink up.

If b/w is all you'll really need pick up a cheap desktop laser. The Samsungs are really popular but the low end models can be noisy. I still use an old (mint condition though) HP 6L since the toner lasts me for years, it's fast to warmup, extremely quiet, and it only uses 120w while printing and 5w on standby.

yeah I have a HP Laserjet 6p and a HP Laserjet 4050, if all you need is black and white, definitely get a cheap laser printer. Color, check out the epson's, I like how they break down the ink cartridges to different colors, so you only replace the ink you use most, not an all in one cartidge.
