If you are looking for photo quality, they don't.
Not unless you spend a few thousand dollars.

Color lasers are great for flyers, brochures, heavy load projects.

Unless you spend a ton of money though, they are also very slow.

Laser Printers are great for printing a lot of black text pages. The toner carts are not cheap but they will last a long time.

On the hand inkjets are getting better and better and for home users and small offices the inkjet is better.

The Canon IP3000 is very cost effective, has sharp black text and can print 500 to 1000 pages. The carts cost $2 to $4 for generic and $12 for Canon OEM.

PS: It takes only 5 seconds to change a cart out.
