Printers, printers, printers....

I'm into photography and have just splashed out on the 7 megapixel Casio Exilim. It rocks x 1000.

Thing is, I'm going to want to print out some of my work as my Deskjet 720C was low quality and has recently died. It sucks because my ex's father had given me 5 cartridges for the thing...

Anyhoo, I'm on the lookout for a new one. However, a recent article in Slashdot and the comments from the Slashdot crew have really slated the whole idea of inkjets and strongly suggest going down the laser route.

I'm not so sure... I'm not going to be printing out hundereds of pages, but the ones I do print out I want to be of a really high quality and borderless. Checking out the low-end colour laser printers, it seems the res that these things can print out is lower than that of an £80 HP inkjet. for example, the InkJet 7450 can push out 4800dpi in colour, borderless whereas a Laserjet 2550l can only push out a laughable 600dpi, and that's at £235!

There was also mention of 'Dye Sublimation' printers. Anyone know how good these are and any decent models?

Cheers.

Color lasers suck for photos.

I've got a $30 HP inkjet that prints better photos than even high end lasers.

Yeah, ink is expensive, but it's worth it.

lazers SUCK for color
get a canon inknet
the pixima ones are pretty cheap and do a very good job

Well slap my ass and call me trevor if the PIXMA iP5000 doesn't reach 9600 x 2400dpi!
I think we have a winner. Individual cartridges too which is neat...

I hadn't thought of canon, HP are my current heros of printing.

AFAICT, Ink is better for photos, but I  my laser for general purpose use.

I have an Epson R800 and it's quality is stunning.

I prefer the Epsons as well. I have two: A C64 for regular stuff including snapshots, and a 1270 for my big prints and stuff I sell.

We have a Xerox Phaser 7550 in our testing lab and this thing does some amazing color.

I don't think the extra initial cost would be worth it for a color laser, they're really only good for massive jobs due to their lower cost per page.

Anyone know anything about Dye Sublimation printers?

Dye Sub printers use heat to transfer the ink to the paper. They're commonly found in the 4" x 6" variety for around ~$150 retail. Olympus makes a full size (8 1/2 x 11) Dye Sub if that is what you're interested in. Dye sub printers will produce the best quality prints if cost isn't an issue.

I love my Epson 785epx and 825 for photos, I also have a Canon that uses ultra cheap ink, I spend about $3.50 per cart for my Epsons and under $1.25 for my Canon.

I don't even bother printing on my inkjet. For 25 cents I can have any photo place print them for me. There is no way in hell I can print a photo for 25 cents on an inkjet.

Where are you getting those prices? I worry about using aftermarket inks on Epsons because the carts don't include the print heads. Any problems with that or with color differences?

I use Tylermartin (Rainbow brand and I hear the USA brand is even better)and with my Epson it dosn't need the print head as far as quality I couldn't be happier. The one problem is that Epsons need their heads cleaned often (even when I used oem inks), however that is a problem with Epsons not the inks.

I'll check them out.

I have a C64 and a 1270. Prices there are nice. I'll try them on the c64 first and see how that goes.

Thanks for the tip!

Np, good luck,

Pixma ip5000 is great, just got one for my parents.

As others have said do not, and I repeat do NOT expect to get quality photos out of a color laser.

Color lasers are great for business color - Powerpoint slides, excel graphs, that kind of stuff. They are OK for the occasional photo or photos embedded in a document but that's about it.

I hadn't thought of canon, HP are my current heros of printing.

Canon has always had decent ink jet offerings. They also tend to put the seperate cartridges on lower end models, where others have the 3-1 color kits.
