ok so I was told to fix a 98 system...and I did...I also ran spyware programs and windows update...now the printer doesn't work...it's connected properly...it prints a self-test page when holding down the power button...but I can't print anything off of word or anything...I reinstalled the drivers...double checked that it's the default printer...nothing...any suggestions?

Question #1 - Printer manufactered by ???

Question #2 - This a USB???? ...USB 1.1??? Usb 2.0 ???

All the printers that I had could print out a test page without being hooked up to the computer

What USB jack are you plugged into? Try the ones on the back of the case thru the I/O shield - front ports or card slot bracket ports may not be connected properly. Also check the Device Manager to be sure the USB ports are properly installed. And I don't think they really got USB sorted out well until Win 98SE... You may need to reinstall the win 98 USB patches and updates. Some of which are available on the mobo chipset mfr's sites.

this is a very old system...amd k6 200mhz..32mb ram...2 gig hard drive...the printer is an hp 648c...anyways I fixed it...I guess the cable connecting the parallel dongle to the motherboard (yes it's that old) was loose...
