Printer wont print in grayscale?

I have an HP 990Cxi, and I am out of color ink. I need to print out plane ticket information which is in a pdf with color. When I print it out, and select grayscale in prefs, it only prints out the black text, and not the color stuff in grayscale. Any ideas why it might be doing this?

Thanks,

Brad

I have owned that same printer for several years. My hunch is that grayscale is done by combining with the color inks. In their absence, there only is black or nothing.

I recently replaced the 990cxi with HP6980, and it has a separate gray ink cartridge that replaces the color one just for that type of need.

have you tried telling the computer that you have the black cartridge and not the color one. How it prints is all in the drivers.

Nacelle makes a good point - in crtol Panel, Printers, go to color management in properties of the 990cxi. It allows you to select cartridges.
