I've had my Brother HL5150D for over a year and I love it, except that whenever I shut my computer down (provided I have used the printer while the computer was on), the printer will wake up for 10 minutes or so before powering down again.

I've called Brother and it sounds like that's just how it works. I've also seen this happen on my parents' HP LaserJet 4L (old school! :)).

Is there any way to stop it from doing this? I don't want to go to extreme lengths or remove any functionality I currently have, but if it's a matter of changing settings, I'd love to figure this out.

In my case, I have everything computer related plugged into one surge strip with a high joule rating. When I shut my computer down, I also switch off the surge strip.----and unplug my phone line from the modem. Then if lighting ever strikes, its gotta have enough poop to jump my surge strip switch and the off switch of any device plugged into the surge strip.

But I live in an area with many thunderstorms-----learned that lesson the hard way after I lost one modem and two modem surge surpressors in a few months.

But if your printer has an on off switch that it over rides to wake up when you don't want it to, get some cheap seperate surge strip with an on off switch and shut off its power that way.-----that will shut the son of a bitch up. Three bucks in out done.------or check with brother and see if they have another way for zero bucks.------but also check with brother to makes sure this waking up is not part of some needed shutdown proseidure or cleaning cycle.

The on/off switch is not overridden, it's always set to "on", but it's way powered down when it hasn't been printing. I'm just looking for a reason why the printer wakes up and whether there is a software-based fix or USB setting to solve it. I don't have a real reason (like lightning concerns) for it to be off immediately after I shut down (unless I have a friend sleeping on the couch who is annoyed at hearing the fan in my printer for 10-15 minutes!).

Does this happen with anyone else's printer? Is it ink or laser? What brand/model? How is it connected to your computer?
