Printer spooler stopped working

This has been a problem that has been going on for quite some time. Just one day my printer stopped working, claiming that the printer spooler stopped working. I uninstalled and tried to reinstall, but each time install wouldn't finish because the printer spooler device wouldn't start. I even tried adding spoolsv.exe as an executable that Windows should never prevent in Data Execution Prevention. Convinced it was my printer, I bought another and it too has the same trouble (tried to install, says could not complete installation, and there's no printer in the Printer folder). I'm ready to toss my computer out the window. Please help.
