here is the situation: I just set my mother up with a new laptop for the accouting she does. Everything was going smoothly until she called today and said that when it prints her checks it prints them really slow. I remember thinking that the test page took a while when i tested it. This is an old epson AP 5000+ S/P and the operating sysyem is XP home. She was using 98se with no slowdowns. I don't know if this information would help, but she also noticed that it seems like the printer is printing a smaller amount (on the page) than it used to. In other words it only used to take 1 or 2 swips per line and now it is taking 3 or 4 per line. does the probelm have to do with the internal printer fonts not being used? that is my guess for now. I went to the epson website and there was no mention of this probelm. thanks and please help me figure this out!

If it's making more "swipes" per line, it sounds like the default printing type is set to a higher quality than normal. I'd check the printing properties and see what the "quality" is set for. I have an Epson 860, and if I'm printing anything, I have it set for "Speed" vs. "Quality". There's a little slider bar that lets you set it to either side.

thanks Slikkster,
figured out the quality settings were too high. set them lower and it is working much faster. thanks again!
