Printer sharing problems

I just set up a network between 2 computers. I wanted to share the printer on one computer with the other so I shared the printer on the one computer then set it up on the other computer. Now everytime I try to print on the other computer I says "Failed to open file". What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Thanx a lot

I don't know what that means, but just try deleting the printer from both computers, and readding it.

Hi.

I've got a simular printing problem on my network. I've have 2 computer network, and I moved my printer( Canon BJC-5000) from one machine (Win 95) to my new one (Win 98SE), and when I try to print from my 95 machine to my printer on the SE machine it crashes both machines. I've been getting spool32 errors on the SE machine, and it also locks up my 95 machine.

Can anyone tell how to fix my problem.

Thanks

Hmm... don't know the specific error message but here is a step by step on how to setup.

1) Make sure Printer and File Sharing are enabled in the Network Neighborhood properties.
2) Installed Printer on host computer
3) Enable sharing by right clicking on the printer in the printer menu. Make sure the little hand appears.
4) On the client computer, you can either:
a) add a printer using the "Add Printer" icon and selecting "Network Printer" then select the shared printer on the host computer.
b) Goto Network Neighborhood and click on the host computer. The shared printer should be there. Double click on the printer and Windows will tell you the printer is not installed. It will give you the option to install it.

5) The shared printer should now appear on the client computer.

Try adding as a local printer to the 2nd computer printing to the port "\\<othercomputername>\<printername>"

Why add local printer if, the printer is on another machine. I thought you'd had to add it as a network one.

It works fine connected on SE machine alone, but trying to go from the
second machine to the main doesn't.

I tried adding another printer to the second computer and got the same error.. Spool32.

If the printer is properly shared, printing to that port does work...Chalk it up to MS vagaries, but I've used it (and am using it) successfully from an NT print server to a 2K machine.

Uninstall printers from both machines. Install as local printer on the machine printer is attached to and share it. Then install as local printer printing to \\computername\printername on the remote machine. Assuming your network itself works, printing will work.
