I'm looking at the Canon MP510, this would be for scanning in years of old photos and printing new digital pictures. This is just amateur home photos and I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do want good quality. I'm actually more concerned about the scanning, I think lots of current printers would be acceptable to me for photos of my kids, but I don't know where the line is on scanning. Are 1200 x 2400-dpi scans good enough or noticeably inferior to 2400 x 4800-dpi ? Is it like a camera megapixel issue where past a certain point the need for more becomes specialized to higher end users? Is it necessary to get a scanner that scans negatives for really good results or is scanning prints sufficient? Thanks for your input.

The 510 is not as good as its predecessor (the 500). Think about bumping up a step or two. The 600 gives you double the nozzles of the 510. You could also consider getting the iP4300 printer (same nozzle count as the 600) and a separate scanner. Epson's web site has been offering some great deals on refurb scanners - free shipping too. You could come out well under $200. for the pair shipped. Newegg regularly sells the iP4300 for $90. shipped - ooops, not any more. It's about $105 shipped now. Provantage is about $95. shipped to here.
