Printer Recommendation?

The bro-in-law is looking for a good printer to print digital pics. Any recommendations or links to printer-review sites would be appreciated.

Canon Pixima series seems to be generally favored. IP 3000 for very good photos and text, but slower. IP 4000 for very good photos (4 x 6 36 sec) and text. IP 5000 (1 pico liter dots) for excellent photos (4 x 6 36 sec) and text. The 6 and particularly 8 color Canons are more vibrant in the reds and greens, but have no text black. Canon's plus over other brands is speed and cheaper factory ink, and there are many even cheaper alternatives.

May I suggest Picasa 2, free at google, for editing and printing. It handles 98% of my needs easily.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm sure I'll go with one of the IPX000 from Canon.

xgsound, what do you mean by "The 6 and particularly 8 color Canons are more vibrant in the reds and greens, but have no text black."

Thanks again,

RE:"what do you mean by "The 6 and particularly 8 color Canons are more vibrant in the reds and greens, but have no text black.""

Canon uses two blacks. One is pigmented (better for text) and the other is dye based (called photo black).

I won't get into the differences on the paper but the general use (IP3000) and the hybrid photo printers like the IP4000 and IP5000 use a larger pigmented black cartridge. So if you're going to print a lot of text and photos, get one of those.

The 6 and 8 cartridge printers are even more dedicated photo printers. But they use a smaller dye based cartridge to deliver the black. So they aren't as good for general text printing...expecially when you consider the smaller size of the black cartridge.

Despite my recommendations for the IP3000 or 6000D, my bro-in-law went with the IP5000 at Fry's Electronics. thanks again for all the help with this purchasing decision.
