Printer paper feed problems

I picked up an old HP 870cxi printer from work (they were tossing it, maybe for good reason ) It prints fine, but it has lots of trouble picking up sheets of paper. Some manual nudging will get the paper in, but that's a pain. I looked into replacing the pickup roller assembly and that's about 20-30 bucks (for the part to do it myself). Anyone have experience with these types of printers and able to tell me if the rollers are the problem or if I should look elsewere to fix it?

I had an HP 870cxi that had the same problem. You can try washing the rollers with a damp rag and see if the problem goes away. In my case it was the rollers - they would get dirty and then the paper would slip during the feed process. Really frustrating, as the printer overall was quite good.

I've already tried the damp cloth. Only a very slight improvement. I'm thinking about giving this printer to my parents (currently use a DJ540 - only about 8 years old... so even thoughphoto quality on this printer isn't too good, it's still a huge improvement for them)

With my old Epson printer, it will have trouble loading depending on how much paper is in the tray. If there is too many sheets, it will jam up. It will load fine when I take some out. If it keeps jamming, just keep on taking more and more sheets out until it works. Hope this helps.

I've tried varying the paper amount too.

I'm really debating whether to spend even the $20 on this printer. I think I may just buy my parents a new decent printer (940 or something like that). My dad's bday is in a month...
