Printer Install Problems

Recently had a harddrive go bad, so have had to reinstall XP-Pro on new harddrive. Did clean-install, then installed SP2, firewall (Sygate), antivirus, spywareblaster...

Went to install printer - Canon i850. Downloaded most recent driver. Installed it per instructions. It detects the printer, goes through the appearance of installing it - it even appears in the Printers list. But then the New Hardware Wizard comes up with an error about not being able to find a file... The only button in the dialog box is "finish" (I think) It then redetects ... can't-find-file error ... redects ... can't-find-file error ... The only way to get it out of that loop is to delete the printer out of the printer list and disconnect the printer. When I need to print something, I can reinstall it and just tolerate the error-box long enough to print, the uninstall it again.

Canon tech-supp was of no help. And everything used to work perfectly on old install (which was XP-Pro, SP1)

Any hints???

Is Virus Scanner off during install? Have you tried installing after booting into Safe Mode?

You could try downloading the drivers again to see if you had a bad download, or try the older drivers that worked originally.

I had a similar problem with an Epson. I had to remove power and the cable from the printer, then uninstall the drivers, reboot, re-install, then re-connect. It was a PITA, but ended the new hardware/multiple install dilemma. <fwiw>

Uncle Bob -- It would help if the wizard told me which file it couldn't find... It gives no clues.

Horsepower -- done all that already

AnonymouseUser -- Oops -- I forgot to mention that. I started out using the original drivers that used to work with SP1. Got the error, so downloaded newest drivers. Same problem. The AV has been on - hadn't thought of that. Also hadn't thought of Safe Mode. Will try that.

Any more hints??
