OK I plug in this Epson C40 Plus, then plug the USB into the PC and turn printer on. XP finds new hardware. I try following it through with that (pointing it to where I have the drivers, since XP doesnt seem to have it's own drivers for it) and it seems to go through fine until towards what I assume is the end, whereupon it reports some problem about "RPC server" and promptly quits.

Nevermind, try manual install. Ran setup.exe and it goes through the motions... and then sticks on "Epson Printer Utility Setup" where it is trying to search for the printer. Eventually I figure since it says "if you do not want to configure printer automatically... click stop searching" I can do that and set it up manually. The dialog box says "Printer is set to PORT, to use printer on a network change port as necessary". and thats it.

Start > settings > Printers and Faxes > nothing there?
device manager... nothing there?
Open wordpad, select print and a dialog box comes up "before you can perform printer related tasks... you need to install a printer. Would you like to install a printer now?" ooookkkaaay... Click Yes, another dialog box: "Operation could not be completed". Same box comes up if I click "add printer" in the Printers and Faxes.

Tried uninstalling the Epson Printer Software through Add/Remove Programs between attempts, no joy. Note that during this it doesnt actually let me select a printer, only "EPSON Stylus C40 Series Temporary Files", and then popups up a warning saying "Warning the default printer has been deleted, there are no printers setup on this computer".

WTH? Help! :(

SOLVED: for searchers, try Start > Run > type in "services.msc" > go to Spooler service > set to auto & start it. Now try installing.

hmm, with my printer I install the software then when it reaches searching for printer, I turn it on & everying is loaded correctly.
if you stop the search I think xp or the epson software will automatically set the port to lpt
