yeah you look like a cheap ass, but if it works, and its pretty much free....why the hell should you care!

On the 300/2.8, the lens hood is long and sturdy enough that I can rest the lens front down on the ground. And I run into people and walls and doors with my 17-55 all the time. If you're looking at it from the standpoint of functionality then the printed ones are great. But the hard plastic ones are designed to take a beating and they'll protect your lens in the process, can't say the same about paper ;)
