I have been having problems w/ my USB ports not recognizing devices...especially now, the printer will not run. I just added in a powered 7 port USB D-Link hub. When I plugged the hub in, it was recognized. However, when I plugged my Canon MP970 cable into it...NADA.

My KB USB cable is plugged into the USB port on my new Dell U2410f monitor...works fine.So, I then plugged the printer cable into the monitor USB port. Error message when I click 'add printer'...'print spooler not running'... I'm quite sure it is running, but where do I check to see if it is/(forgot) And, what if it is running .... so now what?

Well if the printer isn't the only thing the USB ports are having a problem with then there is an issues with the motherboard. One thing that can sometimes clear up USB issues like this is clearing the CMOS. If that doesn't help then there is something more going on that may require a motherboard replacement. If the printer is the only item having issues then there is likely a problem with the printer.

Ive also seen issues like this be cleared up by letting the machine redetect all of its USB. Disconnect the hub, boot into safe mode, and in device manager, expand the USB controllers. Start with the first and just start uninstalling them until they are all gone. Reboot. See what happens. If it works, add in the hub, see what happens.

If they reinstall and there are problems (check device manager to be sure it looks right, no yellow/black exclaomation points, etc), then youre almost sure to have some hardware problem. Clearing or even updating CMOS/BIOS may help, or installing/reinstalling the latest chipset package for your board would also be a good idea. Barring all that, its not looking good for the board.

The spooler can be found in computer management (right click my computer - > manage) under services.
