Print sharing with Win2K

I've never used Win2000 before, so be gentle.... I didn't think it would be much different than Win98?

Anyway, I set up 'File and Print sharing' as a network protocol, then under a local printer, I went to properties and under sharing clicked 'shared as' and gave it a name. Under security, both 'admin' and 'everyone' have printing rights.

Now I go to another computer and attempt to add a networked printer. I browse the network, I can find the workgroup and find the computer, but when I go to expand the computer(to select the printer) I get a box asking for a password:

Enter Network Password
You must supply a password to make this connection

\\computer1\IPC$

The admin password will not work. The only other user on the system (regular permissions?) does not remember her password... she always logs in as admin. I didn't try deleting the other user? I doubt that it.

Basically WHAT network password is it looking for?

You will have to either enable the guest account or create an account for the user running Win98 on your Win2k machine.
 
i assume the computer you're trying to access the printer from is win98?

like was said above, either enable the guest account or create a username that matches the computer name of the box trying to connect to your win2k box. then give that account a pass, and log in as that
 
got it!

so if the client computer (Win98) isn't currently logging in (Client for Microsoft Networking may not be installed), giving the guest account the proper permission should still let the Win98 computer print via the Win2K printer.

Where do I find guest account permissions in Win2K?
 
with win2k pro...you go to start..settings..control panel...users

then you can re-enable the guest account (it's disabled by default)
 
I knew I'd seen the guest account under there (so I was thinking, "I wonder why that didn't work earlier today?&quot😉 DOH! I also wondered why guest had something red on it... a little disabled action for your default pleasure.
