Print quality & screen resolution

I'm trying to print out my digital images and am wondering how to get as close to photo-quality as possible (I know, that's a whole argument/discussion in itself,) but the question is- does my current screen resolution have an effect on the photos I print? The thing is, I have an LCD monitor and it dosent support high resolution- i think 1024 x 768 is highest which I'm on... but my video card can support up to 1600 x 1400 or something like that. I'd like to print in that resolution but my monitor can't go higher so is there any way to set that resolution just for the printer and leave the monitor alone? Thanks for any help!
 
Yeah, the thing that matters is the DPI of the image. Generally, for printing nice quality ones, 300 is the absolute minimum. But like Obenton said, the resolution of the image and the resolution of your LCD will be independent of each other. If you wanted to print out really nice digital photos, might I suggest something like ShutterFly? That's what I use. You get 15 free pictures for signing up, and the quality is superb
