Print dialog box ms word 2000

When I choose "File > Print" the print dialog box opens underneath the current displayed page and the blue bar at the top of the page flashes. I have to minimize the page, then close explorer (from where I started the document and Word, and then from the bottom of the screen re-open word to see the dialog box. If I choose the Print icon from the toolbar I don't have this problem. It appears to happen only in word, not excel.
