It seems Ubisoft realized that DRM isn't helping sales or deterring pirates and dropped DRM altogether for Prince of Persia. It's confirmed for the retail boxed versions only. Downloaded versions will most likely contain DRM.

It comes out tomorrow, so I suggest those of you interested in this game go and pick up a copy. Lets show Ubisoft that they are making the right decision.

Wait so it won't even have a CD key needed to activate it? That's not the impression I got from the forum thread.

I'm taking this with a grain of salt until we have more information, given Ubisoft's track record with DRM. There is a difference between "no DRM" and "no internet activation Securom." I think we recently had Bethesda claiming that Fallout 3 had nothing on it, only to find that it still had the regular CD checking Securom (although implemented in a strange way).

Is it going to be any good though? I watched the video review on ign and the graphics look great and they say some nice things but it looked terribly simple and repetitive, and apparently the difficulty level is set at a 5 year old level - I like a good challenge. People gotta post some opinions once they've gotten to playing it.

I believe my copy of Assassins creed didn't even come with a key either

The first game I remember having a Key was MOH Allied Assault back in 2001 or 2002, that was pretty annoying entering that UBER long key

I'll pick up the game just to support the no DRM thing if it proves to be true.

Really, are we even complaining about cd-keys now?

Let's hope it doesn't actually get pirated more than say Assassin's Creed, or Ubisoft will be back to stricter DRM. From the comments on "certain" websites, it really does look like there is no DRM or cd-key required.

No matter the protection, a game will always be pirated. The better the game, the more pirates will have it, but the better the sales will be too.

If Prince of Persia will be a good game, there will be a lot of illegal copies of it around the world, but there will also be lots of people paying money for it, probably more then the "usual", since there is no copy protection to give you any head aches.

If the game is good, Ubisoft gets rich even if the pirates plays it, so I don't think the lack of copy protection will affect incomes.

Remember how Fallout 3 was going to have "the same level" of DRM that Oblivion did(straight CD check + key), and then shipped with SecuRom in the US and StarForce everywhere else?

Canai - It basically did, it has securom basic copy protection, and only on the falloutlauncher.exe. If you launched directly from Fallout3.exe, it doesn't even check for CD. As for PoP, if this is true, I'll probably be buying it.

Heh if they dont even have a CD-Key this will probably break Spore's record. Provided it is a decent enough game.

Guaranteed its still pirated as much if not more than Assassin's Creed. People don't need an excuse like DRM to steal, it just makes for an easy scapegoat.

I'm not sure what your complaint with Fallout 3 is, you do realize it can be launched via Fallout3.exe without a CD in the drive right? You only need the CD in drive if you want to change something in the launcher.

do you DRM boycotters buy all games that have no DRM or just the good/popular ones that have no DRM?

it seems to me that you guys should be out there buying every drm-free game but i doubt that happens.

We don't support bad DRM, we also don't support bad games.

I'm not boycotting DRM. I'm boycotting intrusive DRM. Basic CD-Checks/cd-key is fine, securom in its lowest form is also fine (basically copy protection/cd check). What is not ok is when they start limiting the number of installs you can do, limit amount of activations. Why would I pay $50 to rent a game?

Generally I buy games from Stardock, Sins of a Solar Empire/GalCiv2. Latest games I bought was Fallout 3.

cause I could give a care! If I like a game, I am going to buy it whether it has DRM or not. These anti-drm people are the same ones who got nervous when reading 1984.

people that think people protesting these intrusive and personally purchased software limiting drms are just showing dementia should continue to buy only EA products to demonstrate their superb consumer prowess.

What he said.
Preventing average Joe to make copies for all his friends is ok, making it a huge pain in the ass for everyone except the pirates is a huge mistake.

That is why I said it was implemented in a strange way. It seems that the launcher contains Securom but not the game exe, as is standard.

It is however, still a form of DRM. It bothers me when people say "I will never buy a game that has DRM", yet virtually all games contain some sort of DRM, like requiring a CD key. It isn't invasive as other forms of DRM, but it is still at it's heart DRM.

True, but I'm always going to wait for firsthand reports on the DRM scheme from people who have purchased the game instead of believing whatever the devs say beforehand.
