Just read it, it's on all the news outlets. Prince has died from (apparently) complications from the flu today. He wasn't very old either, only 57.

this is definitely news though. Prince was a musical genius and a mentor to so many. Just too fucking sad for words.

This is sad. None of the articles mention cause of death. I guess it isn't yet known.

I read that he said he was suffering from the flu, but I don't think any cause of death has been confirmed.

Yeah, haven't been able to find anything conclusive, only that he had been suffering from what appears to be the flu for the past couple of weeks.

Seems like a really young age to die from the flu, especially since he seemed in reasonable shape and was recently at a concert (though he didn't perform).

Prince was a major influence on a lot of artists over the past couple of decades. His music was never my cup of tea, but he was an icon for sure.

Damn that sucks. Always liked Prince's music. Saw him at his club in LA many years ago. RIP.

The rumor that's been going around for some time is that he has had AIDs for quite a long time and has refused treatment for much of that time--I'm guessing because of his Jehova's Witnessing or something like that.

If that's the case, then Flu is going to be a primary killer.

RIP.

If Larry Graham caused this...

I wonder if drugs had anything to do with it. They seem to be a major pop icon killer.

Definitely possible, I saw a story this morning about him getting treated for an overdose just a few days before, but it wasn't from a credible news source so I have no idea if it's true or not. Given the track record with celebs/musicians/stars, it certainly would not be surprising.

TMZ seems to be reporting that. I've honestly come around in the last year and now regard TMZ as, quite possibly, the most credible source for this type of breaking news reporting.

They have better sourcing than anyone else.

Agreed. I don't know if I classify them as a real credible source, but when it comes to celebrity gossip etc, they sure seem to have a lot of good inside sources and are frequently the ones to break news.

Its borderline pathetic, TMZ is a more reliable news outlet than any of the mainstream news sites.

Thanks for the thread. After a long revere and rumination over my tastes and lack of them in music, I became a vulture flying high above the Andes. Sometimes when I'm driving I listen to Sukai.

Maybe it's because I'm older, but I just never really got Prince. Don't get me wrong, I recognize his creative talent.

May he rest in peace.

Yes, they do seem to have better sourcing than anyone else for this type of thing.

News report I heard this morning said influenza. That shit will kill you when you put on the kind of show Prince puts on. He had just postponed a couple of shops citing the flu, and supposedly was treated a day earlier in an emergency stop. Probably on a cocktail - I've heard he took a lot of pain drugs due to a chronic hip issue (men aren't designed to strut around in high heels) - but supposedly he was very religious and didn't take illegal, mood-altering drugs.

It's weird, I've never heard Prince attributed as one of the great guitar players, and now that's all I hear. (Albeit mostly due to a falsified Clapton quote.) After seeing him play with Dez Dickerson, I didn't even realize that Prince played lead guitar in his own band. There was no doubt at that point that Dickerson was THE lead guitarist. Evidently Prince totally eclipsed him in later years and I never even realized.

Worst thing for Prince is that celebrities are said to die in threes and dying at the same time as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince was The Wrestler Formerly Known as Chyna. Somehow I doubt he'd see her as a fitting member of his death triumvirate. lol

Wondering how Captain Kirk Douglas is feeling today. ;)

Prescription main peds, particularly if we are talking about opiates like Oxy, are among the very easiest drugs to OD on. So even if he never took illegal drugs, the possibility of an OD remains.

AFAIK people waste away very visibly when HIV+ gives way to AIDS though: When Freddy Mercury was dying of it, there wasn't any question that something was seriously wrong (and he tried to cover it up). Admittedly I haven't looked, but I haven't seen any recent pictures of Prince that suggest it, and I would have thought that the tabloids would have picked up on it if that was the case.
