I remember the days when Iran was "friendly" to the US...then came the dark days of 1978 and the Ayatollah...and just like that, Iran became a good place to drop a nuke.

Hahaha yeah right. Before 1978 Iran was gripped with a tin-foil dictator that took all the oil riches for himself and was the slave-puppy of the USA, then the Iranians took back their country. Yeah, it's an islamic republic but who cares? Saudi Arabia is also an islamic republic and we sleep with them in bed, so it doesn't matter. Iran's oil is now shared and the people get social services from it and it's not channelled to a private swiss account like it was in the 1960's and 1970's.

And someone came up with the idea of taking the old Beach Boys hit, "Barbara Ann", and changing the words to "Bomb, bomb, bomb.....bomb, bomb Iran!" :whiste:

And then Ronald Reagan beat the wimp Jimmy Carter out of the White House, and pretty much told the world that if the hostages were still in Iran when he took office, it would be a BAD THING.......and Iran blinked, and released the hostages just before inauguration day. God, you had to love old Neutron Ron for that, if nothing else!! :awe:

What sucks is that most of these places were friendly to westerners less than a century ago. A good bit of the change is our own fault too.

Yeah, you wish. Iran never blinked, the one that blinked was neo-con Ronald Reagan who agreed to provide Iran, our enemy, with weapons and aircraft parts for their mothballed Phantom E-4's which badly needed them in exchange for the hostages. It's also worth mentioning that along with the Reagan Administration the Israelis also supplied massive amounts of weapons to the islamic republic of Iran all the way till 1989. All the 81mm and 120mm israeli mortar factories were kept going by Iran's purchases.

Other than when the younger sister died of an overdose 10 yrs ago, the family hasn't been in the news much since they moved to MA for schooling in the early 1980s.

The Shah & SAVAK were brutal, not much better than the Ayatollahs & their followers that came in after the Shah was deposed. The tiny minority of Iranians that thought kicking out the Shah would herald democracy were sadly mistaken.

British invasion/meddling was a huge reason Middle Easterners hate Westerners, especially once oil was found in the regions. Iraq was fairly friendly, at least to the British, until the 1950s or 60s.
