Good to know. Did you do it on Linux or Windows? Currently my i3 cruncher is Ubunutu, but it is on my ESXi server so I have a couple flavors of Windows that I could use as well. I'd prefer to stay on the Ubuntu box though...

Windows. Specifically Win 7 SP 1 . <-- This revision is necessary.

No, not really. I am just somewhat unhappy about RNAWorld needing so much RAM (at least 4 GBytes) which hampers my points.
So I decided to upgrade the comps with more RAM and new OS (Ubuntu) but I do not have the time to do it now.
So I switched 30 cores to PrimeGrid. Although far from my best capacity (it will take at least a month or up to 6 weeks before I can get them all up again ...) - as somebody said: each core counts ...

2300 points in less than 2 hours?
OK, this may be worth it ... let us see how much it will be in 10 hours (i.e. 12 hours from me starting) ...

OK, I admit I am getting frustrated. Where the H do these files need to go in Ubuntu? I cannot find where these app_info.xml etc files currently exist to save my life. Super annoyed.

"Only copy both linux files into the primegrid folder and restart BOINC.

If you're running in Ubuntu 11.10 AND you've installed the repository version from synaptic, then the folder you're looking for is:

/var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.primegrid.com

You also need admin access via sudo to copy the necessary files. As soon as you've copied them, you also have to close and restart the client, otherwise you'll get computation errors."

Phew. I think that did it. We'll see.

Yeah, it's not freaking working. Wondering if it has something to do with ESXi 4.1, although it is pretty explicit about have AVX support. Tried tinkering with the VM settings but no joy there.

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/325282

*mutters darkly*

Evidently the newest version of Player/Workstation will work if you set the VM to be an ESX server in VM type. I am guessing that passes all CPU features through.

If I'm reading that last stats list correctly, Petrus did a 10x dump of WUs in eight hours. Holy cow, I need to start using buy processing time on a rackmount or something.

His profile says ~12k points, but the contest only shows a few hundred. I've seen his config for PrimeGrid, so I am 99% sure there is only one project he has been scoring points on. I suppose there is some update frequency to their standings, it is unlikely it is generated at will when I click on it :)

Hmm... looks like he may have gotten the shotgun of projects at the start - you know, if you configure PrimeGrid preferences after attaching the BOINC client for the first time. Let's hope the junk is cleared out for him. I know his rigs should be quality crunchers....

With the wife's approval, the HTPC Phenom 2 x4 is now happily crunching as well... I need to get a quieter fan for that thing...

Thanks for the stats, Peter! I just found a supplementary form of stats:

chart_uk_pg_compare_challengecredits_team_1327341600;1;2;103;132;2511.gif

Looks like we're in danger from EVGA. Are they offering graphics card discounts or something?

That's the wrong darn way.

Bringing home a 960t today, I'll see if I can get it humming tonight yet...

Good luck on the core unlock. It's a decent chip. Mine is running too hot for my liking since the case it is in is horrible. New HSF coming Friday to cool it down. Going to put an antec h20 620 on one of my X6 machines this weekend to see if I can get a bit higher oc with it.

Wow, that's the treatment :)

I'll probably give it a quick whirl with it all unlocked, if it fails I'll back it down to four cores and get it running with a mild OC. We need the points!

Wow, now I'm sorry I didn't yet upgrade the PrimeGrid quad-GPU cruncher with my hex-core. Would it be worth the downtime to shut it down and upgrade?

Edit: Easier done that said, I guess. Already upgraded to a hex-core. :)

(Will worry about tower heatpipe heatsink and overclocking later. Don't want to stop cruncher for 24hr just to test an overclock.)

Edit: Now I want to upgrade my HTPC with a hex-core and run DC on it too.

Edit: Done!
Unfortunately, temps aren't so good. It has two 40mm fans for exhaust, not all that much airflow.

Edit: I guess this was a bad idea. The air coming out of the back of the HTPC is probably hot enough to make popcorn with. Oye. Stopping BOINC for now, until I figure out what I'm going to do with it.
Temps started at 50-51C, and continued to climb to 64-65C. Air coming out the back feels pretty damn warm.

After this race I am doing a complete overhaul of fans and heatsinks to quiet down my machines.
2 of them are sitting on either side of my tv in the living room, and the noise is finally starting to get to me.
Will be swapping out the 120mm fans that are on my 212+'s with some yate loons to see if that helps (push/pull on both 212+'s).
Going to ditch a tx3 with push/pull (92mm fans) with the antec 620 and will be replacing some cheapy 120mm case fans with yate loons.

Being in a condo my space is limited and the computer noise is tolerable, but noticeable.

Man, I just bought some 212+, are you saying they are loud? As in audible? Booo. I should clarify that I don't care that much about the temps so long as they don't melt or throttle.

960t is unlocked and running now after running mprime -t for ~30 minutes without issue. I didn't touch the multiplier, that'll come later...

I walked out of Microcenter with a 960t, MSI 880G ATX mobo and 8GB of HyperX 1333 ram for $180 after tax and I have a $10 MIR to send in. Back in the day, I hated the people with Fry's in their towns. Now I am loving MC...

A friend of mine was shopping there over lunch too and had a coupon from Facebook and he picked a 2600k for $229. With the higher end ASUS Z68 mobo and 8GB of HyperX he had all that for $420 out the door...

****

So, is there a bonus factor here? Why do some of my hosts get ~25 points per completed task and others 40+? It's making a huge difference between the scores of my various rigs. I mean, its a difference of maybe 200-300 seconds per task - which makes the scores scale very non-linearly.

"Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 23 January 2012 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 28 January 2012 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score."

So, it's based on the difficulty of the task? Hmmm. These tasks don't seem to take twice the time to chew through though, so it must be like folding where you just get the luck of the draw?

Went to bed last night at 9. Just woke up about 20 minutes ago because I am only used to sleeping about 6 hours a night.
Turned on the computer monitors to see how things are going, and all 4 machines are sitting idle! My internet is working, but it must have reset in the last 5 hours. No idea how long things have been idle (max 5 hours). Back up and running now.

Good thing I couldn't sleep anymore.

EDIT: Looks like I was down for about 4 hours. OUCH.

The 212+'s aren't terribly loud, but having 2 of them in rather thin cases is.
Running them in a TT V3 and a CM 371 cases and both are loud.
Dual fan in my antec 200 is silent. That case has 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans as well.

I'm all in now including the AVX app for my 2600K.

Looks like if that is running hot then you'll be worth ~2 Thubans @ 3 Ghz. Pretty solid IMHO and makes running AMD in this race feel like running a Nascar versus an F1. Or something. The car analogy is inevitable so I may as well throw one out there.

Heh, I am running Elite 371's ($30 at one point, if I remember correctly) and they are mostly really thin or just wide open. It would take a nut to put the six or so 12CM fans in these things that they can theoretically hold :p Still, I am surprised at how loud the cooler is for the 1090t compared to the 960t. That 960t cooler is so tiny... Both are using the same motherboards w/the same fan settings (target of 60C) so it can't just be a profile difference... I splurged and went with the MSI 880G boards for those and took the free board for the 1045t, which is also really quiet in comparison.
