Welcome to the PrimeGrid Valentine's Day Challenge. PrimeGrid is running a short, one-day challenge to find primes, and maybe find a record Sophie Germain prime. Overall I'd say this is your third-best chance to find a top-5000 prime this year.

What you need:
  • One or more fast x86 processors. (Even slow ones will do!)
  • Windows, Linux, or MacOS 10.4+.
  • BOINC, attached to PrimeGrid (http://www.primegrid.com/).
  • Your PrimeGrid Preferences with only "Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR)" selected in the Projects section.

What may help:
  • An Intel processor with AVX. (AVX doesn't help AMD.)
  • A 64-bit Windows OS may be slightly faster than other OSes.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A large amount of RAM.
  • Any video cards.

This challenge starts Valentine's Day, February 14 at 18:00 UTC, and runs for only 24 hours. Work not downloaded and uploaded within the challenge will not be counted. Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at that time, just set their queue level very low (0.01 days). This also makes it more likely that you will be a prime finder rather than a double-checker.

Welcome and good luck to all! :)

I see it's moving season. You would be closer to PrimeGrid's servers...if they hadn't moved their servers from the Netherlands to who-knows-where in the Cloud this weekend.

I'll pause all the cores I have in the WCG challenge for a day and point them at this.

Do you think I could get away with telling my wife that I am dedicating my prime seaching to her in lieu of an actual gift? :p

Only if you find a prime number in her honor. And that would take either a lot of luck or a whole lot of cores. Got ~50,000 cores you can dedicate to this? ^_^

hmm some rigs are up and running some refuse to get tasks.... I will keep trying

I'm not having any problems on any of my machines. From the PG race thread:
Still no joy on getting SG units, I have started and closed BONIC several times as well as rebooted my computer and reloaded Bonic still no joy. Any ideas?
Do not pause tasks (which I am betting you did). BOINC will not get work from PG if there are any PG tasks manually paused.

May have been related in that tasks from another project were paused on some machines and therefore work queue was not big enough, but all is resolved now.

Sixteenth - seems about average without Peter. :\ But it's still early, and we're closer to 15th than 17th.

Thanks for the stats!

I got a good start, but I'm hoping to stay in the T200 in order to grab some challenge points

Two hours left. Please try to make sure all your completed WUs are flushed before the race ends.

Good race, all! We seem to have slipped in the stats, although we did pass BOINC@MIXI. The race is still quite close, so cleanup could send us either up or down a notch.
