PrimeGrid Olympics Challenge August 3-5

Welcome to the PrimeGrid Olympics challenge. Did you know that the Olympic motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius", which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger"? Well, let our motto be "Computare citius, intendere altius, et perficere fortius!" (To compute faster, aim higher, and finish stronger!)

What you need:

What would help, but isn't absolutely necessary:
  • A 64-bit OS on a 64-bit processor will run 70% faster than a 32-bit OS.
  • Downloading a few WUs early. This project has a large (35MB) one-time sieve file to download.
  • Reading [post=30943822]Ken's WU Juggling Guide[/post] and applying it once you figure out how long each WU will take.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A large amount of RAM.
  • Any video cards.

If you're running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit processor, there are three ways you can run a 64-bit OS for this challenge.
  1. Install a 64-bit OS as your primary OS.
  2. Install a 64-bit OS as a secondary OS. Wubi is the easiest way to install 64-bit Ubuntu Linux alongside 32-bit Windows.
  3. Install a 64-bit OS on a virtual machine in VMWare. This may not work, depending on your processor, and even if it does work it may be slower than the other two methods. However, it's less intrusive than the other two methods.

This challenge starts on 3 August 2012 at 18:00 UTC and runs for only two days. Only work downloaded and uploaded during the challenge will be counted. Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at the start time, either set their queue level to zero (0) days or try one of the scheduled start method from [thread=2051485]the strategy thread[/thread]. Network connection time options may also be useful - though they depend on your computer's clock being correct, so set the start time a few minutes late.

Welcome and good luck to all!

I'm not sure, but I've noticed my clients are getting 10+ minute delays in obtaining work from the server. Perhaps there's a "rush-hour" congestion going on.

Keep getting these weird checksum errors. 😛
Timing out?

Strange, no issues downloading the PPS LLR WUs. I guess I am out unless I figure this out. Sorry all.

It's kind of early to draw conclusions, but we're already doing better than the last race. 🙂

Geecee, I hope you get things figured out soon. If you're not out of disk space, have you tried resetting the project? If that doesn't help, please post in the project's race thread.

I switched over to the project a day early, surprised I'm not in the stats yet.

It is the "The Riesel Problem (Sieve) 1.12" WUs, right?

I guess I should put up some stats for today. A little more than halfway through the race:

We're a little behind our traditional rivals, but only just. The DPC are up there one slot above the rats.

I see Larry's getting some work in. 😎

geecee, are you out of disk space?

Was only using ~2GB out of the max 10GB I have allocated in my preferences. Just couldn't get it to work. That was my office box anyway. I just got home and started my home cruncher on them with no issues. Should be at least able to contribute ~12-18 WUs by the end of the race. Not sure if the last set of 6 will get in under the deadline.

EDIT: Actually, looks like the initial 6-7 hr estimates shown in BOINC manager were too conservative. It looks like each WU is finishing in 3-4 hrs so should be 30+ WUs hopefully.

I apologize that I am little under powered here, but I am in-between jobs and don't have access to the firepower I had invested in there, my sister (manning a box in Nebraska) is in Africa and I don't have the right access setup to get at the 2500k at my parents place.

So, the two PCs will have to do. I'd like to upgrade the i3, but current expenses include a new tent (a cabelas lodge tent, going to set it up for the first time in the front yard tomorrow...), a new grill (thinking of getting serious and getting a Genesis...thoughts? Trash guys took the rusted out, ~4 year old $200 grill away yesterday.) and getting a bike that actually fits (TBD.) August is going to be rough when you consider that there will be some paycheck juggling.

And to top it off, my current, very soon to be ex employer only pays out 40 hours of PTO, despite me having 68 banked (a miscalculation on my part, just took ~7 days off). Sigh. There is my new cruncher right there, just being forfeited 😛

Ouch that sucks...my recommendation for a grill, get the cheapest one you can find and that should get you through the summer (hell my brother has an el-cheapo Coleman and it's last the last two years with heavy grilling).

I was hoping my borking of three workstations at work (8 cores/threads between three laptops) + four cores at home would have put a serious dent in the numbers count. Oh well, should still keep me in the top 200 for once.

@blckgrffn, sorry to hear you're in between jobs...

I had one of the original Weber gas grills for 12 years. The only things I replaced on it were those "flavorizer bars", the grilling grate once (both just drop-in replacements) and the starter once. The gas manifold was original although I cleaned those tiny gas ports with a wire brush every spring. I got bored with it so wanted a new model which I've had for 4 years with nothing replaced yet. I put the old one out front a couple of days before the trash pickup and it was gone within a few hours. I'm assuming it found a good home and is still going strong...🙂

Even though it's hot as hades here, I tossed in my other 2 computers. Hopefully we can hold off Duke U. and maybe catch KWSN. 🙂

We passed KWSN to move into 13th place. 🙂

I switched off hyperthreading in 2 of my rigs. Should be able to squeeze out 10 more WUs before the deadline.
