Current race: Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR), December 5-6 (00:00 UTC ) (That's December 4-5 for the Western Hemisphere.)

I decided to make this thread into a generic thread for LLR races, because it's getting late to start a thread after the Pentathlon, and I'm lazy. :p

Most of the advice below should apply to whatever LLR race is currently happening, except for the date and project.

-----------------------------------------------

But soft! What light through yonder monitor breaks? It is a prime! And thou art the discoverer!

Welcome to the Shakespeare's Birthday Challenge. As a PPS LLR challenge, this is one of the best chances to find a prime number this year. The bad news is that this is only a "PPS LLR" challenge - there will be no easier PPSE LLR challenge this year. But you still have a good chance to find a prime.

This challenge runs from April 20, 16:16 UTC to April 23, 16:16 UTC. Note the unusual times. "Better three hours too soon than a minute too late," but even better to be right on time.

What you need:
  • One or more fast x86 processors. (Even slow ones will do!)
  • Windows (Vista or later 64-bit, or XP or later 32-bit), Linux, or MacOS 10.4+.
  • BOINC, attached to PrimeGrid (http://www.primegrid.com/).
  • Your PrimeGrid Preferences with only the above project selected in the Projects section.

What may help:
  • An Intel Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, or Haswell-based ("Core series" other than first-generation) processor with AVX may be 20-60% faster than with the default application. Sadly, that does not include Pentium or Celeron processors (sorry Larry), or AMD processors.
    • Re-testing such processors after Thursday.
      Michael Goetz said:
Sometime during Thursday, April 17th (UTC) we are going to install the new FMA3 (aka AVX2) version of LLR on the PPS project, in preparation for the Shakespeare's Birthday Challenge that starts on Sunday.

Especially on Intel Haswell CPUs, but to some extent also on Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge CPUs, this new app is significantly faster. It also consumes more power, and generates more heat. Please make sure your computer is up to running the new app.

Information and discussion about the new LLR app can be found in this thread.
  • A 64-bit OS.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A large amount of RAM. Faster RAM might help, but that's doubtful too.
  • Any GPUs.
  • Any Android devices.

What won't help (and will hurt, sort of):
  • Unstable processors. (Invalid work will be deducted! If Prime95 worked recently on your processor, it should be stable.)
  • Work not downloaded and uploaded within the challenge. (It's not counted. Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at that time, just set their queue level very low (0.01 days). This also makes it more likely that you will be a prime finder rather than a double-checker. But you might want to raise their queue size after the challenge is underway.)

Welcome and good luck to all! :)

P.S. If no one has posted stats lately, try tracking your stats with my user script. With that installed, visit this address for TeAm stats.

I know it says AVX does not help on AMD processors, but I was wondering if that also includes Kabini since it's not Bulldozer architecture.

I...have no idea. I rather doubt anybody's optimized anything for Kabini. It would be like optimizing for Atom.

Mine was delivered yesterday but I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. Will end up being an upgrade to my HTPC most likely, or maybe an upgrade to my router.

4 Core 2GHz APU for $65 that only consumes 25w seems like it could be a bit more useful for distributed computing than Atom.(I'm going to run Collatz and some others on it and see how it does). I will try it out on the Primegrid challenge and see if AVX seems to help or not(I was just curious, because I was always told that AVX on Bulldozer didn't help specifically because of the type of architecture Bulldozer is, so I thought it may help Kabini be useful for the power envelope it's in).

I should also be bringing some other machines to the challenge.

Thursday, April 17th (UTC) we are going to install the new FMA3 (aka AVX2) version of LLR on the PPS project

WOW! Yikes!! Hot, hot, hot!

Early in the week I ran some of the non-FMA3 WUs, seven with HT - max temps were 86 86 86 79.

Today, when the fourth WU started it BSODed. The temps were low 90s.
I lowered the OC by 100 and used an "app_config.xml" to limit to only three FMA3 WUs and four (very cool running) Gerasim WUs. It is running low-mid 80s with max 89 89 88 86.
No errors or invalids yet. Looks like about 30 minutes per WU. I might try lowering the OC to where I can run seven WUs to see how long they take.

Looks like about 30 minutes per WU.
The above was at 4200Mhz @ 1.29v

At 3900Mhz @ 1.22v it looks like it is taking about 2,300 seconds when running seven at a time. The temps are upper 70s with max of 83 82 81 78.

At 4000Mhz @ 1.22v it looks like it is taking about 2,160 seconds when running seven at a time. The temps are lower 80s with max of 86 85 83 80.

This timing is almost convenient for me to do two stats a day. So I'm going to try to do that:

12-hour stats:

Anybody care to share some WU times?

If anybody's curious, the Athlon 5350(Kabini 2GHz part) completes 4 WU's every 2 hours and 45 minutes.

4770k at stock clocks on the other hand is completing 8 WU's every 48 minutes or so.

Peter, would you like to join us?
I was considering it - but I have problems with two of my 6 computers ... and a problem with the cooling of the computer room ... :(.
Down to le3ss than 50% of my usual capacity. :(

My Q9400 is doing them in about 90 minutes each.

Not much movement, except watch out for the horns on those cows behind us!

Thanks for the stats, Ken_g6 :)

... and a problem with the cooling of the computer room ...
Southern Sweden a little more "tropical" than the North?

Both below with HT on.
i7 920 @ 3950Mhz ~105 minutes/WU
i7 4770K@3900Mhz~33.3 minutes/WU
