Welcome to the second-most grueling PrimeGrid challenge of the year, the Cinco de Mayo challenge! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to complete as many Riesel LLR tests as you can, as quickly and correctly as you can. Because these work units take longer than most, you will have a full five days, from May 5 to May 10, both at 18:00 UTC, to work on them.

What you need:
  • One or more fast x86 processors. AVX will help.
  • All of those processors running stably. One good way to check that is to run PPS or SGS LLR for a few days. (Although it's too late for that now, so just try Prime95.) If you get any errors, your processor probably isn't stable at your current clock/voltage.
  • Windows, Linux, or MacOS 10.4+.
  • BOINC, attached to PrimeGrid (http://www.primegrid.com/).
  • Your PrimeGrid Preferences with only "The Riesel Problem (LLR)" selected in the Projects section.
  • Patience! These are long WUs. (Not as long as Seventeen or Bust, but each will probably take at least two days each.)
  • Having hyperthreading off on i3/5/7s is said to help.
  • Following [post=30943822]Ken's WU Juggling Guide[/post] toward the end would help too.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A 64-bit OS. (But if it's Linux, type "sudo apt-get install ia32-libs".)
  • A large amount of RAM.
  • Any video cards.

Work not downloaded and uploaded within the challenge will not be counted. Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at that time, see the challenge strategy thread for ways to start and finish on time.

Good luck!

P.S. I'm very late posting this, but at least it's not May 5 anywhere in the continental US yet.

Thanks for the info. Will divert my cores from SIMAP to the race in the morning. The TeAm did well the first couple of races this year. Would be nice to see us keep up the pace.

I'm in. Since I won't be in the house later today, I'm going to set it active now, and when the challenge starts, I'll be ready.

82 CPU-cores and 8 GPUs got WUs and are running ...
Now lets hope that the cooling is sufficient - OTOH: these are proven PrimeGrid crunchers.
Let us race!

Put the 2600k rig together this morning, clocked it up to 3.8, put on the Hyper 212+ and it is now merrily crunching away.

Should have:

2600k
2500k
1090t
960t @ 6/3.2Ghz
1045t @ 3.15Ghz
i3-2100

I ran a few more rigs last race, but I think the 2600k should fill in for them. @ 140 freaking watts! (according to my kill-a-watt)

Try to recruit more, guys! We've been competitive so far... BioDoc, where art thou? :)

Just now problems connecting to the forums and to the web-driven pages.
Uploading finished WUs (my GPU-WUs) is also not too good.
I hope that this will be resolved ...

Yeah, I tried adding a second rig into the competition, kept getting time-out errors. I'm wondering if they are able to add capacity just for the races? Seems like a good case study for an EC2 instances...they could add some for the duration of the race, then spin down the unneeded resources afterwards.

I'm switched on now. Hopefully things stay cool here as I've had issues in the past with overheating causing errors on these TRP units. Lowly stock cooler on my athlon2 isnt quit enough to handle these wu's if the temps go up too much in this house.

Fingers crossed and crunching away.

Had to scale back the FX machine. Was out this afternoon and just got home and noticed it was running at 65*C. Dropped another 100mhz down to 3.726. Running about 60*C right now. May drop it down to 3.626 to feel a bit more comfortable.

Results are starting to filter in.
I noticed on 2 of my Win7 machines (one running the latest version of boinc) that some wu's are pended after about 1.5 hours of running and others are started and listed as running with high priority.
The pended units all have later deadlines, but we are talking only a few seconds.
With 4+ days to go, not a big deal.

Yeah, we got to work out some kind of WU-switching scheme to get the most out of this - i.e. to see that we don't have a lot of partially crunched WUsd when the race comes to a close. I think there was a thread about this somewhere ...

Only running 1 computer in this race. I missed out on the previous race and will most likely miss out any of them in the future until the weather cools down. Turned off hyperthreading so I can finish my wu faster and hopefully have a better chance of being the prime finder and not double checker. Also may help me towards the end of the race with any wu that aren't completed in time

We are #6 just now - and that is without my approx 24 WUs that will come in within the next 6 hours ...

Thanks for reminding me. I just added a link to my WU Juggling Guide. ^_^

PS. I did the stats before checking the thread ... and I thought: why discard all the nice numbers? ;)
