Prime95 confusion

How exactly do you use Prime95 to test system stability? Is it supposed to run forever?

some people run it for a couple hours and if no errors occour then they say its ok.... Some more avid overclockers run it 24 hours before labling it a completely successful overclock... again with no errors.
