Saw on TV that Prime day was the biggest ever which brings up a couple of questions.

Where are people getting this money to spend?
Why are they spending it on Amazon when the locals need it so desperately?

The story claimed 60% of sales went to small and medium sized businesses but I really doubt that....most of it went into Bezos pocket.

I can buy made in China crap from the one or two local businesses left or I can buy Chinese crap from my phone at will and have it delivered avoiding the whole kinda icky pandemic thing. B&M doesn't stand a chance.

I typically use amazon for stuff that's inconvenient/non existent locally. Prime day means nothing to me.

that is just amazon.ca. I shop on .com as well.
It is super convenient and I get my staff fast as well. Prices are decent and returns are easy. Not much to dislike.

People get money from jobs they work at. They are paid a salary that allows them to buy items

They are spending it on Amazon for several reasons.
1. Because in a lot of cases Amazon is cheaper or the same price.
2. Because it's a one stop shop. You can buy a massive assortment of items in one stop. If you tried to do that locally, you would have to spend more time and gas going to stores to purchase all this stuff. (which is basically summed up as convenience.)
3. Specialty items you cannot get at a store. Especially since places like Radio Shack and such are no longer an option.
4. You don't have to go to a store during a pandemic and avoid being exposed to COVID.

I skipped this Prime Day because people are voting by mail. What's left of our democracy is more important to me than some perceived deal on something I don't need and won't use more than a couple of times.

I pretty much always skip Prime Day, there are never any truly good deals on things that interest me.

I do a fair amount of shipping on Amazon month to month. Living in a small rural area there just are some things you can't buy locally like szechuan peppercorns, black vinegar and xiaoshing wine.

The fact that there was buzz about it is just marketing for Amazon and probably paid marketing for it to show up in mainstream media. Amazon keeps sucking up market share. Prime is their shipping service....they probably take in X orders a day and that's been growing every year by a certain percent as people 'discover' it. The pandemic is fueling sales and prime subscriptions.

For me, I had a number of items in my shopping cart that were discounted on Prime day...one was a charcuterie board and some Cricut transfer tape that I need for some graphics projects I'm doing. I saved at least $7 on those things alone. I bought a $50 GC which got me a $10 credit using a coupon/promo....then used that credit to order two of those wifi garage door openers. Finally, I got 2 Fire HD 10's....one for the Echelon and one as a bday gift @ $80 each (normally $150). So they got like $250 out of me, but I saved a bunch considering only the garage door openers were an impulse buy...and I used the $10 off to justify them.

In the history of time, I can't recall there ever being a good deal on Prime.

The small stuff is so much easier to find on Amazon. Need a new nozzle for your pressure washer? A replacement lock for the toolbox on your pickup, etc., etc. You can drive all over town, waste time, gas, etc., and may not find exactly what you are after. Exactly what I want/need will be here in 1 or 2 days, and it takes me 5 min.

But I support local when I can. Drove to a locally owned ACE hardware and picked up a leaf blower they brought out to my car, after buying it over the phone.

I'm 74 with compromised health, and it appears even the wrong blood type. I've been in 1 retail store since April, and that was a quick in and out to get a battery for the wife's car at Sam's Club. Which by the way, they sell $70 less than any 'auto parts' place.

I'm a deal watcher. I keep my eyes posted for deals on coffee and specific pantry items. They occasionally beat local stores, but not that often.

For other things, they mark prices up (even with prime) to cover shipping. It's a shame we pay tax on the internet these days. I miss the real advantages of online shopping...avoiding the tyranny of taxation like our founding fathers and daddy Trump.

This is exactly how you should do it. I placed probably 15 items in my cart a week or so before Prime Day. I already knew their normal prices. Then I just had to hit refresh of my cart and it would display the price difference for items in your cart. It shows you the original price and the amount decreased or increased. I was able to pick up another 4K monitor for $50 cheaper than it's been. Also grabbed (2) 1TB SSD and a 2TB SSD and a few other items that were well discounted. Plus, we have until January to return the items if we find them cheaper later. It's a win-win if you know how to do it right.

I needed a couple things so I checked Prime Day, honestly I was kinda underwhelmed, none of the stuff I wanted was actually eligible for any deals.

And most of it is only going to arrive in a week or two, and that's with a prime trial. So not exactly 1 day shipping lol.

You live in Timmins, don't expect the Huskey teams to reach you daily.

I did buy a couple things ON Prime-day and the price they were at was motivated BY Prime-day but neither one was purchased from Amazon.

Grabbed a set of noise-cancelling Sony Headphones I've wanted for a long time at $123 (50% off) and a WD Black 500gb NVME drive for $62 at Best Buy.

Funny thing is I think this might be the first time I bought anything on Prime day ever ... there were a few very good deals but its been pretty underwhelming IMO.

My kindle e reader started acting flaky a few days before so I bought a new one. Not a huge savings over normal but something is better than nothing.

Any time I mention how terrible Amazon's website is, people give me horrified looks.

Somehow all the cellphone zombies think it's the most amazing thing ever created.

I always shop elsewhere and try to price check Amazon after I have the EXACT item.

It's been so long since Amazon actually had anything at a fair price I can't recall.

Crises create scenarios where some end up poorer, some richer.

Two of my customers are desperate to get a fancy new desktop keyboard and mouse bundle for example. Neither need it, it's the first time I've ever had such a request in the nearly twenty years I've been in business, but it is what it is.

I doubt it, my business tends to cater for technophobes of varying degress :)

My wife has a similar keyboard and mouse to yours though. I've never understood the interest in hardware lighting personally!

Why do you shop both, do you live near the border or something?

I actually mostly shop on .com cuz prices were better. But with the exchange rate and trade war, .ca is not too bad.
I have a friend who lives in NYC and he comes over frequently.

Been on .com since 2005 or 2006.

You guys have no idea how different the Canadian retail landscape is compared to the US.

Neither do I but I needed to replace my 15 year old mouse. And wanted to get back to mechanical keyboard.

Now that's dumb. I'm sure Amazon does use the USPS, but I have to think most of their deliveries are in house now, with UPS/Fedex as backup.
