Priest who mocked Clinton told to take a leave

This guy runs to the hard left of the Catholic church. There is no denying his views or motives. Even the Catholic church's hierarchy understands his leanings which is why they told him to chill out for a second.

Priest who mocked Clinton told to take a leave

Cardinal Francis George asked a Chicago priest on Tuesday to temporarily step down from his post to "reflect on his recent statements" regarding Sen. Hillary Clinton and her bid for the White House.

Last week, the Rev. Michael Pfleger mocked Clinton at Sen. Barack Obama's former church, saying the New York senator felt "entitled" to the Democratic nomination for president.

In a guest sermon at Trinity United Church of Christ, Pfleger pretended he was Clinton crying over "a black man stealing my show."

Pfleger's sermon, along with past controversial statements by Trinity's former longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, led Obama to resign his membership at Trinity. Pfleger apologized for his comments Sunday.

George asked Pfleger to take leave from pastoral duties at St. Sabina Church in order to "reflect on his recent statements and actions in the light of the church's regulations for all Catholic priests," according to a statement Tuesday from the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The leave was effective Tuesday and was scheduled to last "a couple of weeks," the statement said.

Pfleger, who has promised George he would no longer mention any presidential candidates by name, did not believe "this to be the right step at this time," according to the statement.

"While respecting his disagreement, I have nevertheless asked him to use this opportunity to reflect," George said in the statement. "I hope that this period will also be a time away from the public spotlight and for rest and attention to family concerns."

Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday for Pfleger and the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Pfleger, a 59-year-old white priest at a largely black parish, has gained a reputation for impassioned sermons and activism. The Archdiocese said his temporary replacement is the Rev. William Vanecko, pastor of Chicago's St. Kilian Catholic Church.

What little I saw of it made me chuckle, but I think this has more to do with the guy getting all Political at the Pulpit more than just who he had chosen to Attack.

It was kinda funny, I must admit.

"A black man is stealing my show... BOOO HOOO HOOO" 😀

Frog blast the vent core!
I see the guys name and I immediately think of the Pfhor, remember that game? 🙂 Too obscure?

Anyway this guy has said alllll kinds of crazy stuff in the past. I'm pretty sure the people who invited him to speak knew exactly what they were getting and were *hoping* for something controversial to happen to keep themselves in the media spotlight. It's probably the best thing that church has ever gotten for attendance and donations. 🙂 Seriously. You just KNOW people who never would have went there have said "lets go check it out, we gotta see this". Went, and found out it wasn't really quite what they were told in the media.

Anyone got attendance statistics for pre and post media frenzy for this church? I'd be very very curious to see.

This guy is an awesome social activist who just happens to be a Catholic priest. You underestimate what Fr. Pfleger means to the community he serves.

Officially, he's taking a break, but South Chicago won't let him stay away long.

Yeah, he's a real hero... a hero for social misfits. This guy is not supposed to be using his status to push a political agenda.

And the fact he's openly using misrepresentations of what it means to be mainstream America in order to cater to his audience is sickening. This priest is an abomination. He may as well be a towel headed al queda card member for all its worth considering his message about how America is the root of all evil. He obviously is using the ignorance within his audience to amuse himself. I feel sorry for him if he believes any of his own message.

He's also stated in that speech that they would not "allow" people/media to criticize Rev. Wright. You gotta love the Dems take on free speech.

It's odd that a priest who's message paints Obama in a negative light gets banned by the church, yet all the priests who run around molesting kids simply get reassigned....

Who said he is "banned"?

btw I think he needs to stfu. This is the first catholic priest I have come across who is openly political during mass. I was embarassed to find out he is catholic.

I saw enough of the sermon he preached to understand that he crossed way over the line of what the catholic church stands for. And idiot like that could result in the entire catholic church losing its tax exempt status. And to add injury to insult, he played the divisive race card and unfairly insulted a important American political figure.

We all have to wonder, where in the catholic hierarchy was the decision made, but its meaning is a crystal clear STFU immediately. In terms of what catholic leaders say to him privately, that we can also wonder about, but I imagine his ears are still burning.
