why the inflamatory title? The "Church" didn't get away with rape, just this one preist. I'm not gonna defend the catholic church, they seem to have some problems with their priests, but that title is innacurate.

Your thread topic is a very loose approximation of what happened here. It was because of the statute in limitations; that is all.

just this one preist

just this one priest that has the catholic church throwing all it's weight behind in the form of millions of dollars in lawyers. it's a well known fact that the church puts a sh!tload of money (money that they get from the collections) into defense of their pedophile priests.

tweakmm:

Your title is inacurrate and deliberately inflammatory. Please change it to reflect the facts, not your personal bias.

EDIT: Thank-you, although FORMER-Priest is more accurate.

From your own linked article:

<< The scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston broke wide open after reports that church officials ignored warnings of Geoghan's pedophilia. Cardinal Bernard F. Law publicly apologized to Geoghan's victims and announced a revamped ``zero tolerance'' policy.

In the past several weeks, the archdiocese has given prosecutors the names of 80 priests accused of abuse over the past half-century, and suspended 10 active priests from their posts.

Elsewhere, Roman Catholic Bishop Donald Wuerl of Pittsburgh has removed several priests from the ministry because of accusations of child sexual abuse
>>

SOME people in charge in the Church made a terrible mistake in not acting swiftly and properly when these charges came to light. BUT:

1) The "Church" did not commit any rape - the Catholic Church condemns rape, molestation, and child abuse as some of the absolute worst sins.
2) This is the actions of a BAD MAN.

How many times do I have to repeat this until it sinks in?

The actions of an individual member of a group, when those actions are contrary to the teachings, rules, spirit, and beliefs of that group, does NOT represent the group!

For pete's sakes - the priest was also an American... why not title the thread "America gets away with Rape!". Typical bullsht biased crap...

You wanna slam what happened here? Slam the former priest, as an individual, who did this sh!t. Slam those in power in the Church who let things hide. Slam the legal system!

But what right is there to slam a faith that wholeheartedly condemns this kind of thing?

gopunk:

Bullsh!t. Back it up with facts or retract.

The relationship between the Church and a Priest is like that of a parent to children. If the Church believes that a Priest is innocent, they will of course pay the legal fees - what else would they do, throw anyone accused to the wolves, innocent or not???

If a priest is guilty, they are kicked out of the Church.

Why would God ordain a priest that he knew would use his power to rape? I think God is the real culprit here.

<< they seem to have some problems with their priests >>

Yeah, and the post office has a problem with employees gunning people down. EVERY large organization has problems with some of those employed. But, printing something like "99.9% of Catholic Priests are good, God fearing men who contribute to their community" just wouldn't be grabbing any headlines, now would it?

<< Priest gets away with rape >>

He's already in prison, and is staring at yet another trial. Exactly what did he get away with?

You would think though that a man who supposedly holds himself to high standards would want to pay the consequences for his actions, even if the court thinks too much time has passed since then. Then again, he did sexually abuse a child, so I guess that might not apply
