Pricing of a Mercury Mountaineer versus a Ford Explorer

Now, let's NOT start a flame war with nasty comments about SUVs versus other vehicles, etc.

I am at the point where an SUV is needed. I tow every once in a while 😉 and am tired of repairing/replacing transmissions and we can not yet afford the diesel crew cab truck.

Was looking today at 2002-2003 Ford Explorers and came across a Mercury Mountaineer which was priced a lot lower than the same Ford. Dealer didn't know what either so I checked the NADA listings with the same results. Mercury was less than the Ford.

Anybody know why this could be?

Some sort of obscene error on Ford's part, because the Mountaineer is supposed to be the luxury version of the Explorer.

because the mercury is the less popular one. and yes like eyemwing said, the mercury is supposed to be the better-equipped explorer. mercury has became kinda like the luxury division of ford, but not quite i think...

It is odd. This Mountaineer is loaded with everything. It really is equivalent to the Limited or the Eddie Bauer edition. Leather, heated, 3rd row seat, etc.....it is on there. And yet it is priced like a base model XLS v6. 😕

I originally thought it was a fluke and that something might be wrong with it so I went onto autotrader.com and found the exact one I was looking at but also found the same year, same options vehicle but in a different color (and it had a class II instead of a class III hitch), and the mileages were within 4000 miles of each other. And it was the same price, had just sold yesterday (Friday).

Mercury is rebaged Fords with nicer features.

Lincoln is the luxury division of Ford.

Technically Mercury was supposed to be "Junior Lincoln", the car for a young, up-and-coming businessman who hadn't quite made it to the point of being able to afford the prestige offered by a Lincoln, but who eventually would.
