Pricing for win7

I'm getting my hands on win7 by next (not this upcoming) weekend. My friend has a fairly capable computer, so I was wondering how much a retail license- no media- might cost for win7. Is there any word on what a typical student price may be for the same thing (just the key), through their institution?

On a separate subject- no one has really replied to my other thread... With a pentium cpu w/ HT see a performance increase due to win7's core/smt parking feature? I think my friend has a pentium extreme edition 965, as I vaguely remember his clock speed being 3.7ghz-ish.

Historically, Microosft hasn't provided "Key-only" sales of Retail versions of Windows. There have long been volume license versions of Windows (both business and academic) and subscription services that do offer just the licenses.

The "Anytime Upgrade" licenses for Vista were supposed to do this, and the W7 version of Anytime Upgrade will do so. I guess those are "sorta'" Retail Keys, but upgrade-only and only within the same version of Windows.
