What is the price point on a used 7970 today? I am seeing a lot of used 7970s that are posted for more than what you would pay for a new one.

Given the 280X coming in at $299, my gut says don't pay more than $200 for a used 7970. What are others thinking? Am I cheap?

You know fwiw with the 280x at $299.00 I think you should/might see a nice price drop on the 7970 & 7970GE new in the following weeks to come. You could either go new if this occurs or this in turn should lower the prices on used 7970's.

Yeah I've watched the prices dropping on new 7970s. Seen them as low as $269, which seems pretty good for a new 7970. With Ontario taxes it'd still be just over $300 after MIR. I dunno... within the last 48 hours the used market has flooded with 7970s. Hopefully people aren't stupid enough to buy them at the prices they're asking. Seen some as high as $340, with the average seeming to come in around $280.

People who bought them for $550 less than 2 years ago are trying to get the most in return as they sell them. Probably looking to upgrade to R9 290(X).

Or miners are getting rid of their extra cards.

As for the high prices, I wouldn't worry. If the market is indeed getting flooded, prices will drop soon for the used cards.

Im no sure you will see a big price drop on the non reference 7970's for a while. The 280X in reference design likely wont overclock as well as the current higher end 7970's.

I'm debating dropping my two 7970s (Sapphire DualX, and Ref Sapphire with Accelero Extreme) if 290X performance is comparable. I'm getting tired of the CFX issues (most importantly, why can't AMD fix the fullscreen requirement, that alone is such a nuisance.) I'd prefer to return to a single card. If 290X is 80-90% of my two cards, I'm dropping them.

I'll live on my GTX 660 Ti for a while.

No way you are going to get a used 7970 for under $200. Used ones will barely be under new $7970's AR price if at all. They perform on par with a up coming $299 card. Their price reflects their performance.

If you could use the games from a new card just go that route and get score a couple of the games. If you don't care about the games and don't want to deal with rebates pick up a used card, do a *bit* of haggling via PM, NOT in the for sale thread.

I agree but will be interesting to see how much but of course, the 7970GE needs to come in under $299.00 (259-279?) so wonder where that will put the 7970. But not sure if they going to include the free games or not with the 280X so depending on that which will play a part in it. I not up to date for sure if they are including the free games at this point with the 280x haven't been following this closely lately.

Uhm, who the heck in their right mind would buy a USED CARD with a questionable warranty for the same as a new card? If there's such a nutjob, I haven't met one. I think 200$ or less isn't unreasonable considering the new price of a 280X.

Used prices != new prices. If I were on the market for a GPU, I would not personally pay a cent more than 200$ for a used 7970. Used means a lot of unknown variables. Used means the warranty may not be transferable. Used means potential prior owner may have abused the card or over-volted it too high.

Sorry, anyone who buys used for a new price is not intelligent. I mean, I have seen GTX Titans going for 750$. Used means substantial discounts and for good reason, similar to how automobiles substantially drop in value as soon as they are used.

Hmm. Thanks for the tips. Not sure what to do. I suppose I should just wait and see what the R9 290X does. I've just upgraded to three 1080p displays, and while my current 7970 is adequate-ish for now, and good for past-gen games, I'm looking into the near future and seeing some problems.

Never Settle doesn't seem to be going on the new series right away. I'm sure 6 months from now it will be though. Maybe a year.

Ok.. so some different opinions. Glad I'm not alone. Evidence that I'm not crazy.

It likely depends on the card. I know I would not sell my 7950 TF3's for the same price as the 180$ reference coolers ones that are on sale. They are still 285$ on newegg. I offered tehm to my buddy and he thinks 150$ each is fair. Needless to say Im going to hold onto them a while.

Yeah. Your 200$ pricepoint is fine, OP, but knowing the seller in question is a big variable. When you're searching classifieds, reputation of the seller is everything. I may pay more from someone that I trust, but I still wouldn't pay anywhere near new - Anyone suggesting that a near 300$ price is the norm for a used 7970, well, good luck with that. I have seen among many classified forums (OCN, here, HardOCP) 780s and Titans with substantial discounts. Keep in mind that a used card doesn't have software bundles, the warranty is partially used and may not be transferable, may not include all accessories, and a used card may have been subject to prior owner abuse. You simply do not know what the prior may have done to the card, and for this reason - unless a card is BNIB a used card will always have a substantial discount. Anyone selling for a near new price will probably have difficulty finding a buyer.

Long story short, I personally think your 200$ pricepoint is okay depending on how much you trust the seller. 225$ at the high end for used. But not more than that IMHO.

If you say so. I sold my GTX680 for $330 two weeks ago with multiple offers. The used market is flaky come new release time.

Seems to be a fair amount of used 7970's for $225 shipped today. No rebate, to deal with, no games of course. As the OP already said he doesn't want to pay that much for used. So he needs to go new and deal with a rebate, or wait longer and get a 280X all of course costing more money, especially once all the new 7970's fire sale prices go away.

I sold one last week on eBay (non ghz) for $280 +shipping. I'd expect them to drop quite a bit. Puts used 7870s in a weird spot.

I am hoping for $200 some time after BF4 launch. Everyone and their mother will go mental about 290X, and with the mentality of having to have the absolutely best and most expensive card currently in the market, there will be lots of selling pretty soon.

I have been watching the used pricing on 7970s and they seem to be in the 220-250 range depending on the model and cooler. I would rather pay $275 new with a game bundle and full warranty than $250ish used without. I almost jumped on a pair of 7970s for $220 each last week, but held off and they sold rather quickly, so I would say 220ish is still a good price.

I am waiting on 290 or 290X with PCIe Crossfire support since I want to roll 3X 1440p monitors and standard crossfire bridges can not support that many pixels.

For GTX 680 and some similar Nvidia cards it is last time to get decent prices. So you made a good choice with selling it. They will start to drop in price relativelky soon.

AMD Offensive is one reason
Second reason is that first Maxwell card series are going to be 28nm, so they are not that far away either.

Same was with GTX 4xx/5xx and Radeon HD 6xxx GPUs. They all kept good prices on used market and then suddenly started to lose it.

Last year of 28nm GPUs will be more competetive then last year of 40nm ones, so used models will drop price more / faster.
