Price of pizza

Some people think the place I work charges too much. For a large specialty pizza, the total cost after tax and delivery charge is $19.98. Do the math. A large specialty easily feeds 3 people. Our local Applebee's/Red Robin charges around 8-9 dollars for a hamburger. That's before tax and tip as well. Still cheaper to order a large pizza at menu price :)

Your thoughts? Do you think that's too much money? It's the going rate, but we get lots of complaints on our price (same price as Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa Johns).

I don't mind paying in the area of $20 for a very high quality large pizza from a local place with multiple toppings, but for a single topping large I expect to pay more like $12 & bear in mind this is in Connecticut, so cost of living is on the high side... sounds like you guys are a little pricy.

Keep in mind Washington State has the highest minimum wage in the nation. Our menu prices are very competitive with others. The small chain/local places that are a little more high quality + more toppings are in the range of $22 total for a large that's slightly smaller than ours.

I have customers balk at the price of an extra large specialty pizza (spinach alfredo, The Works, Meats, etc) - with delivery charge + tax, it's like $20.88. The only time I feel bad about delivering a pizza at that price, is when a certain manager of mine is working - he churns out sh!tty pizzas, skimps on toppings, and it looks like crap.

That's way too much money. You compared overpriced pizza to an overpriced restaurant and then said "See, our pizza isn't overpriced!"

It depends on the size of the pizza though. A $20 large at a local pizza shop around here is reasonable because most people can't eat more than 1 or 2 slices. The pizza itself is the size of 2-3 large pizzas at pizza hut or any of those other pizza joints. If your pizzas are enormous, then $20 might not be so bad, but you said it only feeds three and that's really not a good deal.

But man, if chain pizza stores around your place do $20 on average for a large pizza, then I'd hate to live in your area. I might pay $15 including tip when everything is said and done, and I'm getting a lot of toppings with that.

Okay well a typical meal at a fast food restaurant is around 6-7 dollars. Of course that includes drink, but that's barely less than pizza (and I believe pizza is a higher quality food than Wendy's or Burger King).

$19.98. If it includes tax and say a $2 delivery charge, then the pizza is like, what, $16? That's very reasonable for a large specialty.

Red Robin is a bad comparison though. They offer unlimited refills on fries and coke. Try Fuddruckers. $19 gets you 3 large burgers and a basket of fries.

I've got a pizza peel and a stone, so I usually make my own, but when there's no time, I just order whatever deal Round Table is having which, right now, is a large double pepperoni for $12.99. I seldom just order and pay menu price.

What area of washington? Eastern vs western are completely different in terms of cost of living and conditions. I'm in eastern WA (tri-cities), and $20 for a large pizza seems on the high side, but not unreasonable for a quality pizza.

I prefer to simply not pay for pizza... We get it delivered so often at work that I never bother ordering any. :)

Typical fast food meal around here is $3-$4 if you know what you're doing. There have been threads on this, if you order off of the dollar menu you can get the same amount/quality of food for less money at most fast food restaurants.

An average, high-quality meal is $6-$8. Like I said, how big are your pizzas? If they're normal pan crust pizzas, then I have to say that your pizza is on the pricey side. Don't pay $20 for a pizza when you can pay $18 or less.

A large pizza which feeds 3 for $20... wow that is some expensive pizza.

Since everyone is comparing apples to oranges (or pizza to burgers) let me actually compare pizza to pizza.
In my small city east of pittsburgh, there are several pizza shops.

For
$12.99, I can get 2 large (10 slice) 1 topping pizza's at Papa Sals.

$9.99 I can get a XL 16 cut with 3 toppings at the pizza barn.

$16.50, I can get a 21 cut 2 topping big daddy at Foxes.

Then we get into even the higher end pizza chains:
$10.99, I can get a large 8 cut cheese pizza at Papa John's.

$9.99, I can get a large 1 topping pizza at Vocellies.

$14.99, I can get a large specialty pizza at pizza hut, and add a medium 1 topping for $6

$14.97, I can get 3 medium pizza 6 cut 1 topping pizza's from Little Ceasars.

Then there's the pizza shop at the mall which charges 2.29 for a slice with cheese, and 2.59 for a slice with pepperoni.

Regardless, I can feed a family of 4 for way under your prices, and still have cold pizza left for breakfast.

Its pizza...come on, there is no bad pizza (except frozen) and there is no gourmet pizza either. Pretty much all pizza's are the same: Flour, Yeast, Salt, Sugar, Water, Pizza Sauce, Provolone & Mozzerella Cheese, Pepperoni, & Oregeno

I have only been to 1 pizza place as expensive as yours... that would be chuck e cheese for a birthday party.
3 Large pizza's with 2 toppins each came to $64.25

I don't eat pizza often but when I do, it's never from a pizza joint simply because of the inflated prices. Aside from the cheese and meat, there's very minimal cost in a pizza. When I want it, I go to Sam's Club, grab a large frozen pizza and take it up front to the deli where they run it through the pizza oven. Then I'm at home enjoying an underrated pizza for $7.45. It's not as good as some of the mom & pop places but I think it's on par with PH and better than Domino's/PJ's.

I worked at a Broadway Pizza (Minnesota thing) and our large pizzas (specialty) were around 16 a piece or so, give or take for the amount of meat on it.

i don't get the large gap in prices between pizza places.

got pizza from a local place on friday and it was $30 for 2 large 3 topping pizzas.

go to another place and its like $20 for the same pizzas.

go yet to another place and its $15.

and then you've got places like dominoes (i think) that have those $5 pizza deals.

Seems expensive to me. Over the weekend I got a large specialty pizza, a large 1-topping pizza, side order (5) of breadsicks, and a side order of cinnamon sticks for $20.
That fed 4 people with leftovers.

Last night I ordered a large cheese pie (18"), 20 wings, garlic knots and a 2 liter for $20. I think that's a pretty good deal.

Are people still ordering enough pizzas to turn a Profit? If yes, why worry what some people think? If No, they might have a point.
