What will happen to the price of core2 duo/quad cpus after the release of nehalem?

I hope it would drop but considering the fact that Intel just cut the price of their high

end CPU ( after Aug 11), I am not certain wether they are really going to drop

their price again. What do you guys think?

If previous pricing patterns hold the lowest prices will be a few weeks before introduction of Nehalem. Prices will decrease very slowly for a few months afterward, then trend upward.

Remember that it'll take at least 6 months for Nehalem shipments to reach market altering volumes.

I doubt there will be a substantial official price cut any time soon. Retailers may be forced to lower prices in order to move the chips though.

the 65nm chips are pretty much as low as they are going to go. The 45nm chips might see a cut.

Given the fact that they decreased prices ~ on August 11, and that Nehalem ships on September - October, I don't think Intel would make another pricedrop maybe until November - December of this year. Even then, asides from the ~ $550 q9650, I don't see the LGA 775 prices dropping that much (maybe 10 - 30 bucks).

As somebody else said, retailers may lower the prices to balance out Nehalem.

Isn't Nehalem going to start at around $300? If so, I don't think there would be any price drops for products already below that amount. Also, not everyone are like enthusiasts. After A64 came out... heck, even after the Core chips came out, some people still had "Pentium 4" on their brains for a top performance product.

Don't underestimate the purchasing clout of the uninformed. ;)

Difference now is you are going to have a boatload of people with (E2xxx and E4xxx) dual cores , most lower end that will get a dramatic boost in performance with just a simple swap of the CPU, no reloading of app or OS, so the market for 775 procs will be strong for a long period forward

What nehalem core types are first being released ( 2 core..4 core.. 8 core) and about how much will they run. Also..How much will the motherboards cost that support the chips?

I say ... of course. But like some people said I don't expect incredible drops, maybe just the top few models. Probably little change on the sub $300 end.

What's the collective thinking on the motivation for price-drops on Intel's end of the equation?

I'm inclined to think Penryn price drops will depend more on price/performance of Deneb and less on price/performance of i7.

That reminds me of Nvidia vs Ati ( amd ) over gtx200 series and 4800 series
Now I dont have to spend $200 more on GTX.
