Most lcd companies are increasing prices, this is the samsung's reasoning:

Dear Samsung Power Partner:

As you may be aware, the display industry has been experiencing tremendous price increases in recent months on panels used for 15? - 19? displays. These price changes are the result of several factors, including:

- Slower than anticipated ramp-up of fifth generation production facilities in Taiwan and parts of China. Without this advanced production capabilities, manufacturers have not been able to produce quantities forecasted several months ago.

- Large increase in demand for LCD TV products from several manufacturers. LCD TV is one of the fastest growing segments in the consumer electronics space, and manufacturers are scrambling to produce enough panels for the busy holiday season.

- Increases in demand for notebook displays, especially in the 15? - 17? categories.

Samsung?s Digital Information Technology Division has attempted to absorb these price changes with as little impact to you as possible. However, it has become impossible for us to absorb any further price increases, so we are forced to raise our prices effective October 28, 2003. The price increase will affect various models of 15" and 17" TFT-LCD monitors:

Yeah, there was a news post at Ars a few weeks ago (LCD prices may be on the rise) announcing higher LCD prices due to increased demand/limited supply. Not unexpected, and not much different from memory price cycles.
