Hey guys,

How do these gaming cards do for viewing text on websites, which is mainly what I do. Will I suffer eyestrain with one of these cards?

Am I better off keeping my Matrox g400 w/32 ram?

Wait till updated drivers for the Radeon Under DX8.

Heard they're something to behold.

You're probably much better off with the Radeon...its 2d is really nice....as for games, hands down, as it stands, go for the Geforce (more fps, higher resolutions, etc.) Check out Sharky Extreme for reviews of both...or stay around here and check Anands own.

Strain from viewing static text is more likely to be because of the monitor and not the video card. You'll probably want a flat screen with a .24 diagonal dot pitch.

Nodeel & Thyme,

Thanks,

I'll check out the anand reviews. I have a 19" 25dpi GEM monitor, but not flat screen.

I have been "itching" to get a killer card, but don't want to be disappointed with the 2d text.

I had a 3D prophet at one time and it made text so fuzzy it caused me eyestrain. I currently have a Matrox marvel g400 which has beautiful 2d(I finally understand why people recommend Matrox) but 3d speed leaves much to be desired so I?m thinking about a Radeon but after my experiences with the drivers (or the lack of) for some of their previous products I?m afraid to buy another ATI card.

I just did some research on these two cards. Heres what i found out.

1. ATI has better quality.
2. GeForce2 has higher FPS.
3. but radeon is optimized for direct x 8 so radeon will last longer and will probably be a faster card when all the directx 8 optimizations are being used in games.

BTW i got a redeon 32ddr and have been happy with it

It's ATI. When the Radeon2 (or whatever it is) comes out, this will be a boat anchor. They have a history of VERY poor support. It's getting kinda scary that it's really just them and Nvidia these days.

I would disagree about the support. I bought a Rage Fury Pro 128 earlier this summer. When I got the card, the CD that came with it had DirectX 6 and some older software. I emailed tech support requesting a new CD and 1 week later I had the latest version of all the software. The DVD output on my celery 300A OC @450 is excellent. The SVHS output to a TV is on par to a "real" DVD player. I'd imagine that the Radeon is on equal footing.

Problem is that their tech support is located in Canada. When my All In Wonder Pro (back in '98) went bad, I was on the phone with them for an hour trying to diagnose the problem (standard procedure with companies before they issue an RMA) adn afterwards, i was socked w/a $20 phone call to Cnada druing Peak Hours, since their tech support is only open 9 am - 5 pm . No 1 -800 support either...I dont know about Nvidia, but the tech support adt ATI can be improved (at least give an 800 #)

Which is better??

No one has mentioned it yet, but the Radeon cards seem to do a heck of a lot better in 32bit. Just how they mapped there card out I guess. But anywho, if I wasn't so cheap, I would buy the Radeon...

About the question on the comparing of the V5 5500. Well, visuals, the ATI stomps all over the V5. But, if you play mostly simulation games, or those w/out FPS demands, then the V5 maybe for you. The V5 provides the best FSAA out of the current batch of cards... 2x and 4x... But, if you play games such as Quake III, you probably should go with one of the above or better. The V5 isn't much sadly, plus who knows with the support you'll get in the future.

Stick with one of the above, unless your games are limited to Simulation style.
