Can't wait to see Frys combo deals this Friday. Then again the ones after the intel price drops should be even better (next week).

When you install windows for the first time HAL (hardware abstraction layer) will only see 1 processor with opty 146 though bios will see 2 cores. That is what I have read and noticed after much time running various programs (ie coretemp only showed 1 temp until reinstall and task mgr showed 1 proc until reinstal)

Perhaps you did not keep up with windows updates?

No, you do not need to reinstall windows.
On first boot after you change processor from single core to multicore, your current Windows XP will install the multicore support, and task manager will then correctly show both cores. You can choose which core you wish to use for which app, and Prime95 each core seperately. All without needing to reinstall windows. Just did all this in two PC's.

BTW, here is a link that explains a good method for testing both cores using Prime95

Some other folks have said that 4000+ oced to 3gig runs faster than a dually oced to 2.5 or 2.6. If your programs don't take advantage of a dual core process, then why not 4000+? It is cheaper, it has 1 meg cache. The 3800+ has the 2 x 512. I don't know. With 939 dying the way it is, even if single core is not the way to go, it would be a really good upgrade until the newer stuff drops in price. I like this chip because it has the same core as those fx chips. Just my two cents. Actually, I am contemplating getting a dual core..., maybe Opty 170 or x2 4400+. They both have 2 x 1 meg cache. If you are going to go dual core, either of these is what you should get.

Besides the Opteron 144 I just upgraded to with this X2 3800, I also have an Opty 146. These Opty's have 1 meg cache. The 146 is running same as your 4000+, 300x10 or 3GHz stable. There is no comparison to these X2 3800+ CPU's. Testing for 3 days, and the X2 3800+ @ 2.6GHz kills the Opty 146@3GHz, in apps that are not even designed for multicore. Using an app for HDTV, (not optimized for dual core), the X2 3800+ dropped CPU resources from 45% (opty 146) to 20% (X2 3800+). That's HUGE with this app!!!! I am now selling the 146 to upgrade that to another X2 3800+ before they are all gone.

The price just dropped again, to $89.99.

My replacement CPU is on its way via UPS. All in all, Newegg turned around the RMA pretty quickly. Hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow, and we'll see if I have better luck this time.

Man I need to stop coming here..... I have an Athlon 4000+ and was wondering if this would be better. After reading above, Im going to bite and use the 4000+ in my "secondary" machine...couldnt resist 89 bux

I really wanna know the significance of the lower cache. I jus bought a 3700+ 4-5 months ago and I'm concerned about single core performance with a lower cache. OC wise i could oc my 3700+ to 2.6 easily, so would this 3800+ be worth it?

Also, I have someone willing to buy my current 939 based system so I could build a new am2 based system as an option but I'm lazy. I rather just swap cpu chips then reconfigure a new system. I dunno what to do.....

Finally received the replacement CPU from Newegg today. Two weeks total time on the RMA, including the time it took to ship the DOA chip to CA. No hassles. So kudos to Newegg on their RMA process.

The new chip shipped out of NJ (previous chip came from TN, and was shipped back to CA as mentioned above), but I still had to compare the markings to make sure it's a physically different chip. Paranoid, I know. :Q Different markings, different stepping, different chip altogether.

Which goes without saying, because this one actually POSTS. :) I have taken it up to 2.4Ghz @ 1.3v, so far so good. Idles @ 40C, under gaming load (World of Warcraft) it sits @ 54C. Not bad. But running dual-Prime95 on both cores, it gets quite a bit hotter -- maxes out right at 60C, with both cores @ 100%. So far I've only had time to run dual-Prime95 for 30 minutes, and did not get any errors. But I'm wondering if it's safe to run dual-Prime95 overnight at that temp. 60C seems a little high. Or is that normal with a dual-core?

I have good cooling but not great -- decided to ditch the stock HSF and picked up a ThermalTake Silent 939 K8 last week (mounted w/Arctic Silver V). I wanted something with heat pipes and a copper plate, but that did not require removing the mobo to install a backplate or some crazy docking mechanism. I looked at the Arctic Cooler 64 and similar models, but those things are gigantic and weigh a ton! The idea of strapping that thing to my mobo seems kind of frightening. Anyway now I'm wondering if I need better cooling. Case is an Antec SX630II that I've had for a few years, with front intake fan blowing in, rear exhaust fan blowing out. It is a bit cramped in there with the long PCI-E vid card and all the IDE cables.

So anyway, so far so good. Any thoughts are welcome.

Some additional info -- With the side panel removed, the maximum load temp while running dual-Prime95 drops from 60C to 54C. Obviously removing the cover is going to improve cooling, but that seems pretty drastic. Ambient temp in here is 76F (24C). Would this be indicative of a case ventilation problem? Something I could fix with my current case (Antec SX630II with front fan blowing in, rear fan blowing out), or maybe it's time to buy a new case?

I run an Opteron 165 myself at 2.6GHz. When I saw this, I suggested it to a friend who got his today. I feel kind of bad, because his stepping is not what the reviews at the egg say they have. He got a LCB9E 0632DPMW. I read some bad things about ithe LCB9E running hot. Below, is text taken from another web site. It may be true, it may be BS. Anway, before I advise him on whether he should keep it and overclock it or just sell it, anyone have this same stepping? Thanks

"In general a dual core upgrade in your s939 system pays off in the long run. I used to advocate people the value of the Opteron 165 but not any more since AMD started substituting the golden CCBBE steppings with the 'faked' LCB9E steppings. The LCB9E steppings used to belong to AMD's regular 2x1MB dual core lines, such as 4400+ and 4800+. I think AMD make this substitution so that they can reduce the cost of manufacturing the expensive CCBBE's as well as cost down the CCBBE's highly stringent stress testing. The end results? LCB9E generally runs hotter (because of lesser process than CCBBE) and is no longer a sure overclocker (because of easier stress testing.) Your performance/value ratio of a regular 3800+ dual core is close to that of this opteron, even taking into account the overclock factor. And if you don't OC, you might as well get that 3800+ dual core for less from other threads.

EDIT So far we've discovered that both Opteron 165 and 170 are rebadged LCB9E chips originally from 4400+ (2.2GHz) and 4800+ (2.4GHz) lines. What concerns me is that they might have picked the the ones that CAN'T make 4800+ or even 4400+ speed and rebadged them as opti 170 and 165 respectively. It sounds like a conspiracy, but plausible when a chip maker desperately wants to purge their excessive production lines and save every 'wasted' penny. "

You seem to have a case airflow problem, temps should decrease with the side panel on when air is circulating properly through a case.
Make sure there are no obstructions in front of the fans (ie. cables etc.)
You might wanna consider adding fans and /or using higher efficiency fans to increase airflow.

Somniferum, Yeah... I agree that you MAY have a case airflow problem. Temps generally will DECREASE if you take your side pannel off (since it is easier to get the cold ambient air into your case). Your 6C drop is a healthy drop in temp. 60C is on the hot side from what Ive read.

I never get above 40C but my room temp is ~ 65-70F and Im running with an A8N32-sli dlx which has an excellent power solution which helps the cpu run cooler.
My case is an Antec Sonata II with:
Exhaust:
1 PSU fan
1 - 120mm case fan

Intake:
1 - 120mm mid mounted case fan (hardly an intake fan)

OK, in case anyone wonders about the LCB9E 0632DPMW stepping, we decided to damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. So, we did. Already at 2.6GHz, stock volts, stock multiplier of 10, running dual Orthos, one for each core, about an hour so far. Temps in the mid 50s, HSF is the AMD heatpipe (one of my favorites) So far, so good. I like not having to raise the CPU voltage.

This is tempting to upgrade 1 of my 939 setups, but I'm not biting. I already have TOO many "extra" procs laying around so I'm gonna wait to upgrade a different PC (AMD Socket A) with an Intel Duo Core.

I've assembled 7 PCs thus far and all based on AMD. Although I LOVE AMD, I'd like to try Intel for a change.

Actually , if if case airflow is setup properly, removing the side panel disrupts airflow through the case, leading to higher temps. Just like opening a door in a wind tunnel.
