price difference between Intel 3.4 and 3.2 processor

When I look at the prices on the Intel P4 socket 478 - 3.4 processor why is it about twice the price of an Intel P4 socket 478 - 3.2 processor ?

Is the 3.4 that much better/faster than the 3.2 ? Or is this strictly and supply and demand thing ?

Thanks.

Does Intel even manufacture these chips anymore? If they don't then yeah you are likely dealing with one of two things - first it may very well be that there are just that many more 3.2GHz chips remaining in inventory out there in the global market relative to the remaining number of 3.4GHz models that the price delta is 2:1.

A second possibility is that this particular vendor happened to buy a sizable quantity of 3.4GHz chips at a substantially higher price back in the day relative to what they paid to procure their existing inventory of 3.2GHz chips. As such they may simply have no choice but to charge a sizable premium on the 3.4GHz chips because their margins on that chip are so tiny and they aren't willing to take any more of a loss on them than they have to.

To answer the other part of your question that Idontcare didn't touch on directly, no. The 3.4 is not going to be twice as fast as the 3.2, it will be only slightly faster.

Is there any processors that would be faster/better if you are using a 478 pin M/B (that works just fine) ?

Thanks.

No.

But if you are spending $100 on a 478 CPU I would wait or get a total system overhaul.

What do you have right now?

You can get a Frys combo on an E7200 and motherboard for $119. There is no way you should spend a dime on a socket 478 system today.

Yeah, you can get a mobo/cpu/ram in C2D or X2 flavor for $100-150 these days. Don't waste any cash on new + slow P4 chips.

Does your board take 775 P4's? I have a 3.4ghz for sale at the moment for pretty cheap

Boards can't take both 478 and 775

What is a "Frys Combo" ?

I am very dubious that you can buy a "top quality" motherboard/combo for $119 !!!

Not saying that you can't buy one for that price but my experience has been that as the old addage goes "you usually get what you pay for ".

Thanks.

Frys combos are usually worth it for the cpu alone. The mobo included is disposable. If you want S478 cpus, geeks.com has 2.8C for 30.

Just buy the one VirtualLarry suggested for now. Never upgrade that processor until you switch to a new socket after that.

3.4 GHz was as fast as Pentium 4s on Socket 478 ever got. Top-of-line processors always command a premium, even years after their obsolesence. It doesn't really make much sense, but it is what it is.
