would someone give me an indication of the price for the following system?

Dell Dimension 4100
1.7 GHz P4
512 MB RAM
60 GB HDD, floppy
CD-RW, DVD
Ethernet Card
4 USB ports
19" Monitor (assumed generic)

Keyboard, Trackman, WebCam

Windows XP and Office XP Professional, with CDs

someone is offering this is my office for about $ 750. i know the person well, so there's no risk involved here.

Q1... is this a 'good' deal?
Q2... i am going to be using this for video editing ... is this likely to be a good platform for the intended use?
are there general / known issues about upgrading Dell systems?

thanks for any comments

This is an ice cold deal, do a search for dell in the hot deals forum. Typically you can get a new 2.4ghz system for $400-500ish.

1. price checks suck
2. you want to use it for video editing, but no mention of what kind of video card/agp slots this rig has

It's a 4100. 4/5 pci, 1 agp. State of the art, fart.

Still wicked overpriced. You could buy a new one and a hooker for that kind of scratch. 😀

Oooh good catch, he's right. I got my fizzle and fuzzle confizzled, ya dizzle?

Seriously, it cannot be a 1.7 if it's a 4100.

The cheap kind with mallhair and a pinto.

i thought price checks were against the rules ONLY in the FS/FT forum.

You might not like it, but i don't think it is against the rules in OT.

I think you guys are forgetting...the monitor and licensed copies of both Windows XP and Office XP. Where if you ran a non-warez version and did not go to one of these universities where you could buy them for 10 a piece...say 120 for windows xp, 250 for office xp, 175 for the 19" monitor..

I would not give it a cold deal, just neutral if you can get him to knock it down another 100 then maybe.

That is still a cold deal. You can still get all of that for dell with a 2.4GHz P4 for about 100 more. Look at laptops for chrissake! They come loaded w/everything at 1100 these days.

Yep good catch.

It could be a Dimension 4300, 4400, 4500, 4550, or 4600.

I think 8350, the originals had RDRAM (bad bad bad).

Sounds like a big risk of your friend you "know well" is charging you for 2 systems and only giving you one.
