This system was rock stable at 4.1ghz for 2 months now.
after the last 2 nights it's rebooting after about 5-10 mins in any game but is perfectly stable for days if you don't game.

Checked temps on chip it is in the low to mid 50s air cooled under load.
checked the temp on the 580 during gaming right before reboot and it is in the mid 80s

nothing in event logs and system runs fine as long as I dont try to game. wondering if its the 580 or power supply or MB at this point.

tried without any kind of OC at all and still same behavior. BTW vid card has never been OCed at all though.

this is a revision 1 Asus P8P67 with Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 ram EVGA GTX580 and a Thermotake 750 PS the PS is very old now as this whole machine is a technology test box from work.

looking for some other techs ideas on this one.. I do have other cards I can try as well as my personal Corsair 850 PS from my SLI system I can try just dont really want to yank it out of my system..

OK thanks yeh.. I was afraid of that. lol havent gotten around to testing PSU's yet but thats where I'm gonna start.. will update when I get time to tear down both systems..

Ok.. yoinked a GTX460 out of my SLI box.. put it in here and it games for hours with no issues and gets through several system benchmarks with no issues. at 4.2ghz stable again.

so down to 2 possible bad components.. GTX580.. or the power supply cannot keep up with the 580s demands.. I'm betting PSU is giving up the ghost.. time for a Corsair 🙁

Put the 580 into your SLI box and test. I don't know what PSU you have in there but it's worth it to test before replacing the wrong part.

The SLI box has a Corsair 850 more than ample for the 580
yeh this was my next step for sure.

Any luck CVSiN? ...would like to hear an update? From what I've read it definitely sounds like the PSU is cutting you short on performance.

only time I had those symptoms was when the power supply in one of my units went bad. system would run forever if I opened nothing but basic browser stuff os text documents but would be down withing a minute or so once it was into a game.

I had a PSU in one of my systems do this. The problem is your Thermaltake PSU (same kind I had). It would work fine with my 9800GTX, but when I installed a GTX275 it produced the symptoms you described. Fortunately EVGA tech support knew the answer (great company BTW).

The problem is that Thermaltake PSU have low amperage accross multiple 12v rails. This is fine most of the time, but when you get a graphics card in there with a high demand for power you need more amperage on a single 12v rail.

My reccomendation, get a Corsair power supply. They are the highest rated on newegg, and I have had no problems with mine.

If your PSU is splitting power over multiple rails, make sure that the 6/8 pin connectors aren't all coming from the same rail. i.e split the load if possible.
